PASADENA, Calif. - UCLA senior captain David Pietsch scored a career and team-season high six goals as the fourth-ranked UCLA men's water polo team defeated No. 7 UC Irvine, 10-8, Saturday afternoon at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center. In front of an estimated 1,000 fans, UCLA improved to 9-2 and extended its home winning streak to 15 games.
Pietsch, a Hawaii native who currently leads UCLA in all three offensive categories (goals, assists, steals), notched three of his six goals on UCLA 6-on-5 advantages. Overall, the Bruins used four extra-man goals against none by UC Irvine (5-6)
After the first period the Bruins and Anteaters were knotted a 2-2, thanks to goals from Pietsch and Krsto Sbutega for UCLA and Tim Hutten and Chris Peters for UC Irvine.
In the second, however, the Bruins pulled away, scoring four unanswered goals to take a 6-2 lead into halftime.
The Anteaters outscored the Bruins 3-2 in each of the two final periods but the halftime lead stood and the Bruins held on for the 10-8 victory. Back to back UC Irvine goals by Nate White and Andrew Dunn late in the fourth period made the contest close.
Junior Will Didinger grabbed five saves for the Bruins while Joe Wynne tallied four stops for UC Irvine.
