Bruin Baseball Falls to 14th-ranked Texas A&M, 8-2

The Bruin baseball team fell to 11-5 on the season after suffering an 8-2 loss to 14th-ranked Texas A&M (14-3) in front of 556 fans at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Aggies wasted no time in taking the lead, scoring one run in the top of the first inning. A walk and stolen base from Cory Patton would place the outfielder in scoring position and would be drive home by on an Eric Scheidt single.

Two more Texas A&M runs scored in the second on a two-run homer from Kevin Whelan. After two, the Aggies led 3-0.

Texas A&M extended its lead to six in the top of the seventh inning, but Ryan McCarthy would get two back for the Bruins with a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh. Heading into the eighth frame, Texas A&M led 6-2.

Two sacrifice flies in the eighth inning would drive in the final Aggie runs of the game and seal the 8-2 win.

Junior Wes Whisler (1-1) suffered his first loss of the season. He pitched five innings and allowed four runs on six hits.

Aggie starter Zach Jackson improved to 4-0 with a 6.1 inning, four hit performance.

McCarthy finished the day with two hits, while Billy Susdorf and Matt Thayer both doubled in the contest.

The Bruins will be back in action on Tuesday when they head to UC Irvine for a 6:00 p.m. match-up against the Anteaters.
