LOS ANGELES - Claire Sua crushed her eighth homer of the season, a three-run blast in the fifth inning, and Amanda Freed tossed a four-hit, complete-game shutout as the second-ranked Bruins defeated Oregon on Saturday at Easton Stadium, 7-0. UCLA improves to 39-6, 7-3 Pac-10, while Oregon falls to 18-20, 0-11 Pac-10.
UCLA opened the scoring with two runs in the fourth inning, getting RBI singles by Stephanie Ramos and Crissy Buck for a 2-0 lead. The Bruins exploded for four more runs in the fifth. After Natasha Watley's bunt single and 30th stolen base of the season opened the inning, Tairia Mims brought her home with a single and advanced to second on the throw home. After a two-out walk to Ramos, Sua crushed a three-run homer, a line drive to left field for a 6-0 edge. UCLA added one last run in the sixth inning when Watley scored on a two-out error.
Freed was in control all afternoon in the circle for UCLA, allowing just four hits and two walks while fanning 11 in the complete game shutout to improve to 17-2 on the season. Offensively for the Bruins, Watley went 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Buck was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Connie McMurren (6-7) took the loss for Oregon, allowing eight hits and four runs in 4 1/3 innings.
UCLA and Oregon meet again on Sunday afternoon in a 1 p.m. single game at Easton Stadium.
