IRVINE, CA - After opening the day with a 9-5 loss to eighth-ranked Long Beach State, the fifth-ranked Bruins (3-3) took home seventh-place in the So Cal Tournament with a 5-4 win over Loyola Marymount in Irvine.
In the first match of the day, UCLA faced a red-hot Long Beach State team and Erik Geoffroy, who scored four goals in the match to lead all players. After allowing three first quarter 49er scores, the Bruins were unable to take a lead in the contest, despite two goals from Brett Ormsby. David Pietsch, Grant Zider and Logan Powell each scored for UCLA. Goalkeeper Joe Axelrad posted six saves.
Pietsch would score the game winner with 3:49 left in the second game of the day, as UCLA defeated the Lions, 5-4. The Bruins took an early 1-0 in the first quarter and would never trail in the game, as Ormsby recorded two goals for the second straight game. Thomas Foley and Peter Belden also found the back of the net for UCLA.
In the championship match of the tournament, USC defeated defending national champion Stanford, 10-9 in a sudden victory overtime contest.
The Bruins will return to action on Friday, September 26 in a 6:00 p.m. match-up at UC San Diego. UCLA will also open its home schedule on Sunday, when it hosts UC Irvine in a 12:00 p.m. non-conference match.
