Cosby Finishes Ninth in Women's Shot Put

UCLA freshman Jessica Cosby was ninth in the women's shot put and Bruin sophomore Cari Soong placed 11th in the women's hammer at the World Junior Track & Field Championships, held Oct. 17-22 in Santiago, Chile.

On Tuesday in the women's shot put, Cosby placed ninth with a mark of 48-11 3/4. Last year as a senior at Cleveland HS in Reseda, Cosby earned prep All-America honors from T & F News.

On Wednesday in the women's hammer, Soong finished 11th with a mark of 178-7. In qualifying, she placed third in her flight with a mark of 191-0. As a true freshman last year at UCLA, Soong won the women's hammer at the U. S. Junior Meet and placed eighth at the NCAA Outdoor, earning All-America status (197-7, No. 2 all-time U. S. Junior mark). Soong is from Riverside North HS.

UCLA redshirt freshman Dan Ames, from Lakeside and El Capitan HS, on Thursday did not qualify for the men's shot put final. In qualifying his mark was 53-11 3/4.

He is also competing in the men's discus, with qualifying set for Friday and the final on Saturday. Ames won the men's discus at the U. S. Junior meet last summer, with a mark of 189-8.
