Los Angeles, Calif. - Arizona bested UCLA 71-60 today before a crowd of 2,138 in Pauley Pavilion to win its fourth game in the last five outings and fourth straight in Pac-10 conference play. Sophomore guard Aimee Grzyb led the visitors with 19 points, including five three-point shots in the first half. Junior forward Krista Warren added 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Arizona grabbed the lead for good in the game after holding UCLA scoreless for almost six minutes midway through the first half on the way to a 33-28 halftime advantage. After UCLA took a 20-19 lead at the 9:22 mark, Arizona ran off seven unanswered points. Whitney Jones scored on a three-point shot at the 3:26 mark to break the Bruin ice and make it 26-23 in favor of the Wildcats. UCLA then closed to within one point at 26-25 with 2:41 to play in the half, but could get no closer the rest of the game.
Jones, a sophomore forward, led UCLA with a season-high of 17 points, including four from three-point range. Bruin junior guard Natalie Nakase added 10 points and a career-high 11 assists. With the loss, UCLA falls to 5-12 on the season and 2-7 in the Pac-10 conference. Sophomore guard Gennifer Arranaga was also in double figures for UCLA and finished with 12 points.
Arizona, which hit seven of eight free throws down the stretch to secure the win, evened its overall record to 9-9 and improved its Pac-10 mark to 5-4. The Wildcats will play at the Bay Area schools next week.
"We played hard once again today," said Bruin head coach Kathy Olivier. "We just did not finish. We must make our shots when we get a good look. Arizona switched its defense in the second half and we had trouble getting open shots."
UCLA will play on the road next week with games at Oregon State on Thursday night and at Oregon on Saturday night.
