Second-ranked Bruins Looking for Third Straight Victory

March 31, 2005

UCLA's defending NCAA champion women's golf team travels to the PING/ASU Invitational, to be hosted by Arizona State at the Karsten Golf Course, Apr. 1-3.

The Karsten Golf Course will play to a par of 72 over 6,230 yards. The Bruins won this event last year for the first time by posting a team score of 861 (-3).

"We are looking forward to playing in the ASU tournament," said Head Coach Carrie Forsyth. "We have had some down time recently with final exams and the holiday weekend, so the team is excited to get back into tournament play."

The Bruins won their last event, the SJSU Spartan Invitational at Corral del Tierra, by two strokes over the University of Washington. For Forsyth, the victory was her 14th as the Bruins' coach. Last year, UCLA set a school record by winning seven tournaments, including the NCAA title, and Forsyth earned Pac-10 and NGCA Coach of the Year honors.

Two seniors, one junior, a sophomore and a freshman will represent the Bruins at the PING/ASU Invitational.

"Karsten Golf Course is one of our favorite venues, and all of the players on the team are comfortable with it," said Forsyth. "I expect that we will have one of our best performances of the season."

Senior All-American Charlotte Mayorkas continues her assault on the UCLA record books this spring. Mayorkas is seeking her sixth career tournament title, which would tie her for the UCLA record with Kay Cockerill (1983-86). She is the two-time defending individual champion at this event -- no player has won medalist honors at Karsten three straight years. Mayorkas, ranked sixth nationally last week, leads the team in scoring at 72.5 and rounds under par at seven.

Fifth-year senior Melissa Martin finished 11th at the Arizona Wildcat tournament and ranks fifth on the team with a scoring average of 74.9. This season, Martin has two Top 20 finishes and boasts 10 in her career.

Junior All-American Susie Mathews boasts three Top 5 finishes this season and ranks in a tie for second on the team in scoring at 73.4 after placing third at the Spartan Invite. A two-time academic All-American, Mathews boasts 10 career Top 10 finishes and was ranked 15th in the nation last week. Mathews' final round 68 (-3) at Corral del Tierra was a season-best score.

Sophomore All-American Hannah Jun has posted three Top 10 finishes this season. She recorded her best finish of the season, tying for eighth at the Arizona Wildcat. She owns seven Top 10 finishes in 19 career appearances.

Freshman Amie Cochran of Torrance ranks in a tie for second on the team in scoring at 73.4. She boasts four Top 10 finishes, including a victory at the Kent Youel Invitational in October. At the SJSU event, she fired a second round score of 66 (-5) on her way to tying for sixth place. Last week, she was ranked 22nd nationally.
