PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State soccer team (6-5-2, 1-2-0 Pac-10) upset No. 8 UCLA (9-4-0, 2-1-0 Pac-10) 1-0 in a Pacific-10 Conference match at Lower Soccer Field, Friday. Cougar Alix Rustrum scored the game winning goal to give WSU its first victory over the Bruins since 1993.

The WSU goal came at the 15:31 mark when Rustrum beat UCLA goalkeeper Valerie Henderson with a shot to the lower-right corner of the Bruin goal. The Cougars' leading scorer ran onto a through ball from freshman Molly Alexander and dribbled into UCLAs 18-yard box before scoring her seventh goal of the season.

Washington State goalkeeper Katie Hultin recorded nine saves in her fifth shutout of the season which also marked the first time since 1994 the Cougars have shutout the Bruins.

No. 8 UCLA is the highest-ranked opponent Washington State has knocked off since defeating No. 2 Washington in 2000.

The Bruins posted 17 shots, 10 in the first half, but Hultin made six saves in the first period to maintain the 1-0 lead going into halftime.

In the second half UCLA continued to test the Cougar defense, recording seven shots including a Bristyn Davis shot that bounced off the WSU goalpost.

The Bruins had an open-goal opportunity thwarted by Cougar Angela Fajardo 77 minutes into the match when the sophomore defender cleared the ball off the goal line just before a UCLA forward could reach it.

UCLA continues its road trip on Sunday, taking on No. 7 Washington in Seattle beginning at Noon.
