UCLA to Host Pac-10 Women's Golf Championships, Apr. 19-21

April 18, 2004

The second-ranked UCLA women's golf team, winner of three of its last four events, will host the 2004 Pac-10 Women's Golf Championships, Apr. 19-21, at Saticoy Country Club in Somis, CA.

Saticoy Country Club will play to a par of 72 over 6,405 yards. The format includes 54 holes of medal and team play. Continuous tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. each day from the first and 10th tees. Admission and parking for the tournament are free.

Results will be posted on GolfStat's live scoring page and continue throughout the event. Visit www.golfstat.com for live scoring updates.

UCLA enters the tournament as the highest ranked Pac-10 team at No.2, followed by No.4 California, ninth-ranked USC, No. 11 Arizona and No.12 Washington.

UCLA also boasts the conference's top-ranked individual in junior All-American Charlotte Mayorkas, who is rated No.2 by GolfWeek (Apr. 5). Other top players include No.4 Erica Blasberg, the 2003 National Golf Coaches Assn. Player of the Year, 11th-ranked Susie Mathews of UCLA, 13th-ranked Irene Cho of USC, 16th-ranked Sarah Huarte of Cal and No.18 Paige Mackenzie of Washington. In addition, Washington State junior Kim Welch is tied for the national lead with four individual tournament titles.

California is the defending conference champion after winning its first Pac-10 title last season. Cal added women's golf to its athletic program nine years ago and last season enjoyed its best season by winning seven tournaments. Head Coach Nancy McDaniel earned 2003 Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors.

The Bruins have won three of the four events they've played in 2004 and will be looking to add a conference championship to their mantle. UCLA won consecutive conference championships in 1990 and '91. Under fifth-year Head Coach Carrie Forsyth, the Bruins have made three consecutive appearances in the NCAA Championships and won the 2002 NCAA West Regional title.

"Our team will be focused and ready to play for the conference championship," said Forsyth, who was a member of UCLA's last two league titleists. "We are looking forward to the challenge of playing for the conference title.

"Saticoy Country Club is a phenomenal venue for the tournament," she continued. "We are looking forward to a great tournament. The golf course is challenging, and it places a lot of demands on course management and short game."
