#2 Bruins Lose Tough Match to #1 Stanford

In a match-up between No. 2 UCLA and No. 1 Stanford, the Bruins lost 6-4. With the loss, the Bruins are now 8-3 overall, 2-1 MPSF.

Stanford's Julie Gardner scored the first goal of the game with 2:13 to go in the first quarter, but the Bruins tied the game on a Natalie Golda goal with 1:05 to go in the quarter. Gardner scored again with 4:37 left in the second quarter to put the Cardinal ahead 2-1, but Bruin Thalia Munro netted a goal to tie the game at 2-2 with 3:40 to go in the half. With 3:05 remaining in the half, Stanford's Ellen Estes netted a goal to put the Cardinal ahead 3-2.

The Bruins scored first in the third quarter to tie the game at 3-3 on a Golda goal. Gardner answered for the Cardinal with 11.7 seconds remaining in the quarter to regain the lead. Stanford's Brenda Villa scored in the fourth quarter to put the Cardinal up 5-3. Jenny Lamb netted a goal with 5:37 to go in the game to bring the score to 5-4. But, with 11.1 seconds remaining in the game, Villa scored on a penalty shot to give the Cardinal a 6-4 lead and the win.

Golda led the Bruins with two goals. Lamb and Munro each netted a goal. Jaime Hipp ended the game with nine saves. Julie Gardner led Stanford with three goals, followed by Villa (2) and Estes (1). Jackie Frank had five saves in the game.

Next up for the Bruins are Cal State Northridge and Long Beach State. UCLA will face Northridge Friday, March 8, at 4:00 PM, and Long Beach State Saturday, March 9, at Noon. The next Bruin home series will be March 29-30, when the Bruins will host Pacific and Cal.
