No. 7 UCLA Readies for Non-Conference Showdowns

This Week . . .
The No. 7 UCLA women's tennis team (2-0, 2-0 Pac-10) will put its unbeaten record on the line this week when the Bruins host UC Irvine this Thursday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center beginning at 1:30 p.m. Then on Saturday, UCLA heads to Malibu for a showdown with No. 10 Pepperdine beginning at 11:00 a.m. The Bruins own a 57-12 all-time record against these two opponents (Pepperdine 32-10, UC Irvine 27-2).

Bruins Sweep Arizona Schools to Start Dual-Match Play . . .
On Jan. 27, UCLA opened its 2001 dual-match campaign by knocking off then-No. 7 ASU, 4-3 at the LATC. UCLA, which lost the doubles point and was actually trailing 3-1 at one point, rallied to come back and win four of six singles matches en route to the upset victory. The Bruins came back the next day to easily defeat No. 24 Arizona, 6-1, pushing their record to 2-0.

UCLA Climbs in ITA National Rankings . . .
After starting the season 2-0, UCLA moved up two spots to No. 7 in the latest ITA rankings released on Jan. 31. The Bruins were ranked No. 9 in the preseason ITA rankings, however upset No. 7 ASU, 4-3 in their season opener and beat No. 24 Arizona, 6-1 the following day.

Walker Reaches Quarterfinals at Rolex Indoors . . .
Sophomore Sara Walker won two matches en route to the quarterfinals at the Rolex National Indoors last weekend in Farmers Branch, Tex. Walker defeated No. 10 Anna Monhartova of Tulane, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 in the first round and No. 17 Jessica Lenhoff of Florida, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round. Third-seeded Michelle Dasso of Notre Dame ended Walker's run in the quarters, winning 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. The Rolex National Indoors is the third leg of the ITA Collegiate Grand Slam.

Fritz-Krockow, Fisher Make Immediate Impact . . .
Two newcomers to this year's team that have stepped in and contributed right away are Mariko Fritz-Krockow and Lauren Fisher. Fritz-Krockow, a native of Tokyo, Japan, dropped a tough three set match against Arizona State in UCLA's opener, however bounced back the following day against Arizona to win both her singles and doubles matches. Fisher, a freshman from Pittsburgh, Pa., is unbeaten in both singles and doubles. In UCLA's 2001 season opener, Fisher and teammate Petya Marinova upset No. 19 Brown/McCoury of Arizona State, 8-4.

March Madness at the LATC . . .
From March 2-11, UCLA will host three non-conference matches at the LATC, including a showdown with crosstown rival USC. The Bruins kickoff the homestand with New Mexico on Fri. Mar. 2, followed by a match with the Women of Troy on Sat. Mar. 3. On Mar. 10, UCLA welcomes the University of Miami to the LATC and on Sat. Mar. 11, the Bruins will take on the University of Texas. Texas, ranked fifth in the latest ITA rankings, will be looking for revenge against the Bruins as UCLA knocked the Longhorns out of last year's NCAA Tournament.
