Southern Cal Western Regional: Three-time defending national champion UCLA (18-8 overall, 6-3 MPSF) will take its next step in defense of its national title at this weekend's Southern Section Western Regional Qualifying Tournament, which will be held at UC San Diego's Canyonview Pool on April 23-25. This is the first year that the Western Regionals have been divided into Northern and Southern sections. Last year, the Bruins defeated Stanford 7-4 in the title game.
On Saturday, April 24, UCLA meets the San Diego State Aztecs (19-13 overall, 3-6 MPSF) for a 9 a.m. game. In their two meetings with the Aztecs this season, UCLA easily handed San Diego State two losses, both by at least a six-point margin.
The same day, the Bruins face off with their rival USC (24-2 overall, 8-1 MPSF) at 2 pm. The Bruins have lost all four of their games against the Trojans this season, but have never lost by more than two points. The Bruins last met with the Trojans April 10, when the Trojans defeated the Bruins, 7-5, at the MPSF Tournament.
Sunday's matchups will be determined by the results of the Friday and Saturday games. If UCLA qualifies for the Collegiate Championships, the Bruins will travel to UC Davis on May 7-9 to try and contend for their fourth straight national title.
Bruins Move Up in the Polls: After UCLA upset Stanford, 7-6, in the third place match at the MPSF Tournament on April 11, the previously fourth-ranked Bruins moved up a notch to number three in the U.S. Water Polo National Collegiate Poll. The Bruins have been ranked fourth for the entire season except in the sixth week of competition, when they earned a number three ranking.
All-Federation Selections: Freshman Elaine Zivich (Lompoc) received first-team All-Federation accolades. The 5-11 attacker is currently leading her team with 48 goals. Zivich has scored in all but one of UCLA's 26 games this season. Freshman Jenny Lamb earned second-team All-Federation honors. The 5-7 playmaker from Huntington Beach is the third-leading scorer on the team with 25 points. She is currently posting a 48% shooting percentage, the second highest on the team.
Honorable Mention honors went to goalkeeper Erin Golaboski (Severna Park, MD), senior Katie Tenenbaum (Merced), senior Mandy McAloon (Millersville, MD) and senior Amanda Gall of Placentia.
Four Bruins Make MPSF All-Tournament Team: Zivich, Lamb, Golaboski and McAloon were again rewarded for their efforts, each earning second team honors on the 1999 MPSF All-Tournament Team.
Celebrating Women's Athletics: The UCLA Athletic Department will celebrate the Silver Anniversary of UCLA Women's Intercollegiate Athletics on May 1, 1999. "A Celebration of Champions" dinner will honor the accomplishments of the UCLA Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Program and its athletes over the past 25 years.
