Stanford, CA - The No. 1 UCLA women's water polo team began MPSF tournament play this evening with a convincing 12-3 win over the Rainbow Wahine. The Bruins, who are seeded third in the tournament, move to 20-3 overall and advance to tomorrow's semi-final game against USC.
UCLA scored first with a goal from freshman Kelly Rulon with just over five minutes remaining in the first period. Following Rulon's goal, three straight goals from junior Natalie Golda would put the Bruins up 4-0 before a Hawaii goal made it 4-1. However, sophomore Kristyn Pulver would score with seconds remaining in the period to give UCLA the 5-1 lead. In the second period a Hawaii goal in the opening minute of the period was countered by a goal from senior Maureen Flanagan. Another goal from Golda and one from freshman Kristina Kunkel would put the Bruins up 8-2. After a Hawaii goal made it 8-3, another goal from Kunkel with thirty-one seconds remaining made it 9-3 UCLA at half. The second half would be a defensive contest between the two teams, as the Bruins would get goals from Pulver, Kunkel and senior Devon McIntyre while holding the Rainbow Wahine scoreless to earn the 12-3 victory.
Tomorrow's game against USC will be at 7:15 PM. The winner will advance to the championship game to face the winner of the Stanford-Long Beach State match.
