Irvine, Calif. - The second-ranked UCLA women's water polo team lost the third-ranked Stanford Cardinal, 5-4 in the Semifinals of the MPSF Tournament at UC Irvine. The Bruins records drops to 25-4, 11-1 in the MPSF conference and will face USC on Sunday in the third place game at 1:30 PM. Stanford moves on to the championship match against Hawaii.
In other tournament action, No. 1 USC was upset by No. 4 Hawaii, 10-9. This is USC's first loss of the season, which ends its run to match its 2004 undefeated year. All MPSF teams now at least have one loss.
UCLA struck first with a goal at the 3:45 mark in the first quarter, but the Cardinal came back and took a 2-1 lead after two quick goals. During the second quarter, neither team was able to score.
In the third quarter, Stanford scored again at 4:04 to take a 3-1 lead. The Bruin offense stepped up and scored two goals within 40 seconds, tying the match at 3-3 with 2:21 to go in the period.
Stanford quickly took charge in the fourth, putting in two goals early. UCLA fought back with a goal at 2:21 left to bring the game within one, but the Stanford defense held on. This is Stanford's second victory over UCLA on the year.
The team will face USC in the third place match at 1:30 on Sunday. The Bruins are 0-2 against the Trojans this season.
