PORTLAND, OR - At the 2003 NCAA West Regional Championship, hosted by the University of Portland and held at Blue Lake Park, the Bruin women automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships, placing second with 69 points. The Bruin men placed seventh with 178 points. The Stanford men and women won the regional team titles, scoring 18 and 45 points, respectively. The men's individual winner was Stanford's Ian Dobson, who completed the 10K course in 29:32. Stanford's Alicia Craig won the women's individual title for the second consecutive year, completing the 6K course in 20:06.

The top-two teams from the regional meets automatically advance to the NCAA Championships. The top-four men and top-five women not on automatically qualifying teams also advance automatically as individuals. At-large individual and team bids will be announced Monday. The NCAA Championships will be held Monday, November 24, in Waterloo, IA.

In the men's 10K race, two Bruins received All-Regional honors. Leading UCLA were juniors Erik Emilsson and Jon Rankin. Emilsson placed 17th in 30:13 and Rankin was 24th in 30:23. Freshman Austin Ramos placed 26th in 30:24.

Junior Ben Aragon ran 31:04, placing 54th. Redshirt freshman Chad Galbreath placed 57th in 31:10. And, sophomore Mohammed Qazi placed 66th in 31:23.

"I feel differently today than following the Pac-10 Meet," said Head Coach Eric Peterson. "The whole team did a much better job of identifying the competitors from other schools that they needed to focus on. After being able to recognize where the race really was for us, they ran with more confidence and patience. And, as a result, improved their team finish."

"I am really pleased to have two All-Regional performances in Erik Emilsson and Jon Rankin," said Peterson. "Although Austin Ramos is not completely pleased with his finish today, he capped off a tremendously strong freshman season and has a very bright future."

"It is worth noting that we will wait until Monday to see how many teams from the West Region are accepted to the National Championship meet to be able to determine whether or not Emilsson has a chance to be included as an at-large individual for the NCAA meet."
