BRUINS SWEEP PAIR OF WEEKEND CONTESTS: UCLA (5-3) extended its winning streak to three matches with wins over sixth-ranked UC San Diego and ninth-ranked UC Irvine last weekend.
In La Jolla on Friday night, Bruin goalkeeper Joe Axelrad recorded 11 saves while allowing only three goals en route to a 5-3 UCLA victory. The Bruins built a 5-1 lead in the third quarter and were able to hold off the Tritons by allowing only one goal in the final frame. Five different Bruins scored in the contest, including freshman Tyler Kandel who scored his first collegiate goal in the win.
UCLA defeated UC Irvine, 12-8 in its home opener at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center on Sunday afternoon. Junior driver Brett Ormsby posted a season-high four goals in the win, while junior center Ted Peck recorded his first hat trick of 2003. Sophomore Michael March also scored twice in the match.
THE NOR CAL TOURNAMENT: The Bruins will travel to Stanford this weekend when they defend their title in the Nor Cal Tournament. Last year, UCLA defeated USC, 6-3, in the championship match to claim the crown. Goalkeeper Brandon Brooks won MPSF Player of the Week honors after averaging 12 saves over the four matches.
Up first for UCLA at Stanford will be 11th-ranked UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos enter the weekend with a 7-5 mark on the year. UCSB pushed defending national champion Stanford into overtime in the second round of the So Cal Tournament, only to fall 9-7 at the hands of the Cardinal. The Gauchos finished 10th in the tournament.
THE STREAK CONTINUES: With his four goals in the Bruins 12-8 victory over UC Irvine, Brett Ormsby has stretched his scoring streak to 40 consecutive matches. The streak dates back to November 3rd, 2001. In fact, the El Cajon native has only been held scorless once in two and a half collegiate seasons (October 27, 2001 at Stanford) and has scored in 50 of 51 matches over his years at UCLA.
BRUINS IN THE POLL: The Bruins fell to seventh in last week's Collegiate Coaches Water Polo Poll after a seventh-place finish at the So Cal Tournament. The poll is released every Wednesday during the season and can be found at www.collegiatewaterpolo.org.
