The third-ranked UCLA men's golf team is in fourth place after the first round of competition in the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championships, hosted by UNLV.
On Friday, the Bruins posted an 18-hole team score of six-under par 282 at the par 72, 7,440-yard Southern Highlands Golf Club. Top-ranked Florida leads the field at 11-under par 277, followed by Arizona State and Clemson at nine-under 279. Georgia and Arizona are tied for fifth at four-under 284.
Senior John Merrick paced the Bruins in round one with a four-under par 68 and is tied for fifth place individually. Merrick was two-under par on both nines and only had one bogey. Senior Travis Johnson fired a two-under par 70 on a card that featured five birdies and three bogeys. He is tied for 14th place. Senior Steve Conway and junior John Poucher are tied for 26th place after posting even par rounds of 72, and freshman Peter Campbell is tied for 38th after carding a 74.
Arizona's Henry Liaw leads the field at seven-under par 65, followed by Clemson's Jack Ferguson and Arizona State's Niklas Lemke who each fired 66s.
