WESTWOOD, Calif. - In the Pac-10 Conference opener for both teams, the top-ranked UCLA men's tennis team swept the No. 55 Arizona Wildcats 7-0 Friday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the win, UCLA now stands at 4-0 overall and 1-0 in Pac-10 action. Arizona drops to 0-1 both overall and in conference play.
UCLA started the day on a positive note by sweeping doubles play and claiming the first point of the match. The UCLA team of Jong-Min Lee and Brandon Kramer finished first, cruising past Arizona's duo of Alex Aybar and Jean-Noel LaCoste 8-3 on court No. 1. The Bruins clinched the doubles point when the team of Lassi Ketola and Chris Sands handed Arizona's tandem of Tom Lloyd and Alex Brown an 8-5 defeat in the No. 2 position. Last to finish were UCLA's duo of Jean-Noel Grinda and Jean-Julien Rojer, who battled back from a 6-7 deficit to defeat the team of Michel Stopa and Caleb Marquardt 9-7 on court No. 3.
In singles action, the backcourts sealed the victory for UCLA, cruising to three straight set victories and bringing the score to 4-0. Newcomer Jean-Julien Rojer posted the first singles win for UCLA when he defeated the Wildcats' Tom Lloyd 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 5 position. Soon after, Erfan Djahangiri finished after posting an identical 6-0, 6-3 victory over Alex Brown on court No. 6. Junior Chris Sands captured the win for the Bruins when he downed Caleb Marquardt 6-2, 6-2 on court No. 4.
The frontcourts provided much the same picture, as UCLA once again grabbed three more straight set victories en route to a 7-0 sweep. Minutes after the backcourts finished, senior co-captain Brandon Kramer sailed past Arizona's Michel Stopa 6-1, 6-2 on court No. 2. Next to finish was Bruin freshman Lassi Ketola, who defeated Jean-Noel LaCoste 6-3, 6-4 on court No. 3. In the top position, Jong-Min Lee completed the lopsided victory when he won the first set in a tie-breaker, then claimed the second 6-4 against T-86 Alex Aybar.
The Bruins will be in action again tomorrow when they host No. 28 Arizona State for a noon matchup. Admission is FREE.
