AUSTIN, Texas-- UCLA junior Chris Sands defeated Marino Baghdati of Texas Tech in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) today. With the pre-qualifying win, Sands advances to the Oct. 12-13 singles qualifying tournament of the 1999 Reebok/ITA All-American Tennis Championships.
In the men's singles pre-qualifying tournament, Sands earlier defeated both Clemson's Darren Knight and Iowa's Jake Wilson in straight sets.
Earlier in pre-qualifying tournament action UCLA's Alan Bohane defeated Arkansas' Henrik Tofft but fell to Indiana's Ian Arons in straight sets. Bruin freshmen Zac Knysh and Jared Freedman fell in the first round of the pre-qualifying tournament.
In men's doubles pre-qualifying action, Zac Knysh and Alan Bohane defeated Jason Marshall and Andrew Wakefield of Purdue. The duo will now advance to the round of 32.
The ITA Men's All-American Championships is the nation's largest Division I tennis tournament, with over 350 competitors. The toughest hard-court event of the fall collegiate season, the Reebok/ITA Men's All-American Championships consists of 64-player singles and 32-team doubles main draw. Players must win two qualifying rounds to advance to the main draw. The main draw begins Thursday, Oct. 14 and concludes on Monday, Oct. 18.
