Castelanelli Earns First-Team Academic All-District Honors

Nov. 3, 2005

LOS ANGELES - UCLA women's soccer player Mary Castelanelli was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District-8 Team on Thursday. By being selected to the first team, she is now on the national ballot and is eligible for Academic All-America honors, released later in the year.

Castelanelli, a junior defender from Lodi, Calif., has been an instrumental part of one of the top defenses in the nation in 2005. The Bruins, who are currently ranked fourth in the nation, are on pace to break the school record for fewest goals allowed in a season (10), a mark set by the 2000 team, which made it all the way to the NCAA Final that year. In addition, with its next shutout, this team will have posted the second most shutouts ever in a season with 14. The Bruins have already tied the school record for consecutive shutouts with six and will break that record if they hold Arizona scoreless this Friday. Lastly, UCLA's goals against average of 0.32 ranks second in the nation, trailing only Lehigh (0.23). Castelanelli has contributed on the offensive side of the field as well, recording eight points on two goals and four assists.

In order to be considered for the Academic All-District team, athletes must have at least a 3.2 GPA, be a starter or significant contributor and be at least in their second year of competition at the institution.
