Women's Golf Coach Jackie Tobian-Steinmann Announces Retirement
By: UCLA Athletics

August 10, 1998

LOS ANGELES -- Longtime UCLA women's golf coach Jackie Tobian-Steinmann, who guided the Bruins to the 1991 NCAA championship, will retire effective June 30, 1999, the athletic department announced today.

"Jackie has been a legendary pioneer in collegiate women's golf for the past three decades and has set a standard of excellence for the UCLA program," said Athletic Director Peter T. Dalis. "She deserves much credit for the success and growth of collegiate women's golf at UCLA and around the country."

Hired in 1977, Tobian-Steinmann has been the Bruins' only women's golf coach, building the program into a national power. In 1979 - her second season as coach - the Bruins won their first conference title and finished ninth nationally. In the last 18 years, the Bruins have finished among the Top Ten 11 times and captured four conference titles.

Tobian-Steinmann won the 1996 National Golf Coaches Assn. Coach of the Year award and was voted the 1989 LPGA Coach of the Year. A member of the National Golf Coaches Assn. Hall of Fame, she has won six regional coach of the year awards, and in 1987, she was the recipient of the inaugural Gladys Palmer Award, honoring the coach in the United States who contributed the most to collegiate golf.

Since 1985, Tobian-Steinmann has coached 14 different NCAA All-Americans, among them current LPGA professionals Christy Erb, Kay Cockerill, Lisa Kiggens, Kristal Parker-Gregory and Jean Zedlitz.

A national search for a new coach will begin prior to January.
