WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The UCLA women's volleyball team was picked second in the Pac-10 Preseason Coaches Poll, as announced by the conference on Tuesday. The Bruins picked up 75 points and one first-place vote.
Stanford was tabbed as the preseason favorite, garnering nine first-place votes and 90 points. USC was picked third (68 pts.), followed by California (62) and Washington (59). The bottom five were Oregon (51), Arizona (39), Arizona State (32), Oregon State (31) and Washington State (18).
Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams and the point scale goes 10 for a first-place vote, then 9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2.
The Bruins return 11 letterwinners from last year's squad that went 23-11 for their ninth-straight 20-win season and reached the NCAA Regional Final for the fourth time in the last five years. Six of seven starters return, led by two-time All-American Nellie Spicer and All-Pac-10 honorees Ali Daley and Kaitlin Sather. The Bruins also bring in a solid recruiting class that was ranked fourth by Volleyball Magazine and Prep Volleyball.
UCLA opens its 2008 campaign in Honolulu at the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic (Aug. 29-31). The season begins on Aug. 29 against Ohio, followed by matches with defending national champion Penn State on Aug. 30 and the host Rainbow Wahine on Aug. 31.
