12TH-SEEDED BRUINS HOST REGIONALS AT EASTON STADIUM
The 12th-seeded Bruins (36-18, 12-12 Pac-12) host NCAA Regionals this weekend at Easton Stadium. On Friday, UCLA faces Hofstra (38-13, 19-0 Colonial Athletic Association) at 5:30 p.m. Gametracker and free audio will be available at UCLABruins.com, as well as live updates at twitter.com/uclasoftball.
If the Bruins advance through the Los Angeles Regional, they will take on the winner of the Gainesville Regional next weekend, which includes #5-seed Florida, South Florida, UCF and Florida Gulf Coast.
BRUINS IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
Through the end of the regular season, the Bruins are the nation's leader in slugging percentage at .586 and are also in the Top 10 in four other categories. UCLA is fourth in batting average (.343) and home runs (81), fifth in runs per game (6.8) and tied for sixth in doubles (86). Individually, freshman Stephany LaRosa is in the Top 30 nationally in five categories, ranking 10th in batting average (.445), tied for 15th in runs batted in (60), tied for 19th in sacrifice flies (4), 24th in slugging percentage (.815) and tied for 26th in home runs (16). Senior Katie Schroeder is tied for 12th in runs scored (59), 23rd in on base percentage (.524), 33rd in batting average (.412) and tied for 49th in doubles (14). Also in the Top 50 nationally in their respective categories are seniors Samantha Camuso (slugging, .767, 33rd) and Dani Yudin (walks, 43, T-19th), and sophomore Jessica Hall (saves, 4, T-15th).
BRUINS IN NCAA REGIONAL PLAY
UCLA is making its 28th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and holds a record of 177-42 (.808 winning percentage). During the Regional round, the Bruins are 78-10 (.886) and have gone undefeated 19 of 27 times. Since Regional play moved to a four-team format in 2005, the Bruins are 20-5 (.800), advancing to the Super Regionals in `05, `06, `08, `09 and `10. The Bruins will be hosting an NCAA Regional for the 18th time in 28 tournament appearances. UCLA is 47-3 (.940) in 17 previous Regionals at Easton Stadium and 56-6 (.903) overall during postseason games in Westwood. Seniors Samantha Camuso (.382), Andrea Harrison (.333) and Katie Schroeder (.328), and junior B.B. Bates (.302) are each hitting over .300 during their NCAA Tournament careers. Camuso has 10 homers and 25 RBI, while Harrison has seven homers and 21 RBI. Career stats for the Bruins in the postseason are available on page eight of this release.
NEWS AND NOTES
Head coach Kelly Inouye-Perez recorded her 250th-career coaching victory against Utah on April 20 ... along with their Pac-12-best .343 batting average (through May 12), the Bruins are also first in the conference in slugging (.586), hits (493), doubles (86), home runs (81) and total bases (842). The full listing of UCLA team and individual standings in the Pac-12 is available on page five of this release ... the Bruins saw their 87-game winning streak when scoring at least six runs come to an end in the first game of the April 10 doubleheader against Stanford. It was the most runs for UCLA in a defeat since May 6, 2000 at Arizona (lost 12-9 in nine innings). UCLA lost again on May 6 against Arizona when scoring six and are now 95-2 in its last 97 when scoring at least a half a dozen ... UCLA is 22-0 this season when limiting its opponent to two runs or fewer ... the Bruins are 24-0 when leading after five innings and 22-0 when leading after six. Starting with the 2008 season, UCLA is 146-1 when ahead after five (only loss vs. Florida, 2/25/11) and 134-1 when ahead after six (Washington, 4/23/11) ... the Bruins are 0-14 this year when getting out-hit or tied in hits ... 38 of the Bruins' 81 home runs have been solo shots. The third inning has been the best for homers, as the Bruins have 23, with the first frame ranking second with 20 dingers ... senior Katie Schroeder is in the UCLA career top 10 in seven categories, ranking second in runs scored (199), third in stolen bases (50), tied for third in hit by pitches (32), fourth in on base percentage (.478) and walks (115), sixth in hits (272) and tied for seventh in batting average (.374). Senior Andrea Harrison is listed six times, coming in at fourth in slugging (.655), home runs (54) and total bases (461), fifth in runs batted in (187), sixth in doubles (48) and seventh in hit by pitches (19). Senior Dani Yudin is tied for second in walks (121), sixth in on base percentage (.444) and eighth in hit by pitches (18), senior Samantha Camuso is seventh in slugging (.602) and sophomore Jessica Hall is third in saves (6) ... freshman Ally Carda has earned a win and produced at least a pair of hits in the same game six times (Loyola Marymount, Fordham, Pittsburgh, UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly, Stanford-Game 3) ... Camuso recorded her first-career, two-homer game on May 6 against Arizona. She has 33 for her career and double figures for the second time in her career (16 in 2010) ... sophomore Talee Snow has nine multiple-hit contests and six multi-RBI games, including one of each on May 10 at Oregon ... Stephany LaRosa's 16 home runs are the second most by a freshman in a single season at UCLA. Stacey Nuveman holds the record with 20 in 1997. Nuveman also holds the UCLA single-season freshman mark in average (.457) and RBI (71), with LaRosa at .445 with 60 RBI ... Hall's four saves tie her for second on UCLA's single-season list with Christa Williams (1997). Megan Langenfeld holds the record with five saves in 2008 ... Harrison is one homer away from tying for third in UCLA history (Caitlin Benyi, 55). She has reached double figures in dingers for the third straight season ... junior B.B. Bates leads the Bruins with nine game-winning RBI and seven game-winning runs scored, and hit her 30th career homer on May 12 at Oregon ... sophomore Kellie Fox recorded her fourth-career, three-hit game in the first end of an April 10 doubleheader against Stanford and is four hits away from 100 for her career ... Schroeder stole her 50th career base on May 10 at Oregon. She is two doubles away from 40 and one run scored away from 200 ... sophomore Alyssa Tiumalu hit her 11th career home run on May 4 against Arizona ... Yudin drove in her 100th career run on May 10 at Oregon.
SCOUTING THE HOFSTRA PRIDE
After starting the year 4-12, Hofstra, which is making its 13th NCAA appearance, has won 34 of its last 35 games heading into the postseason, including 17 in a row. The Pride (38-13) went 3-0 last weekend to win the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament after going 19-0 in the CAA this season. Hofstra is 4-7 against teams that made the NCAA Tournament, beating Virginia Tech, LIU Brooklyn, Iona and Lehigh. Five of its seven losses were to ranked foes, including a setback to UCLA on March 4. The Pride carry a .301 batting average with 42 home runs and 39 stolen bases, averaging 5.7 runs per game. Olivia Galati leads Hofstra at the plate and in the circle. The junior is batting .370 with four homers and 37 RBI, and is 30-5 with a 0.90 earned run average and 331 strikeouts in 232 2/3 innings. Four others are hitting over .300, including junior Tessa Ziemba, who is tied for the team lead with 11 homers and is first with 43 RBI, and junior Becca Bigler, who also has 11 homers. The Bruins lead the all-time series with the Pride 3-1, defeating them on March 4 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. (box score and recap on page 7). The teams have never met in the NCAA Tournament and all four matchups have come at neutral sites.
SCOUTING THE FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES
The Seminoles are headed to their 13th-straight NCAA Regional (25th overall) after closing the regular season with a 46-14 record, finishing second in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 16-5 mark. Florida State is 14-11 against teams in the NCAA Tournament. The Seminoles were 2-5 against squads currently ranked in the Top 25, beating North Carolina twice, while losing to Hawai'i twice, North Carolina, South Florida and Florida. Florida State is hitting .268 as a team with 31 home runs and 81 stolen bases, averaging 4.7 runs per game. Junior Tiffani Brown and sophomore Courtney Senas are each hitting .305 to pace the team. Brown has 42 stolen bases, while Senas has 19. Junior Briana Hamilton is tops on the squad with 11 home runs. In the circle, freshman Lacey Waldrop and junior Monica Perry have split the action. Waldrop is 19-5 with a 1.35 earned run average and 137 strikeouts in 160 1/3 innings, while Perry is 21-5 with a 1.64 ERA and 188 strikeouts in 174 2/3 innings. The Bruins lead the all-time series with the Seminoles 8-1, but the teams haven't met since 2002 at the Women's College World Series, with Florida State winning 2-1 in nine innings. The teams have met five times in the postseason, with UCLA going 4-1, including a pair of victories at the Los Angeles Regional in 2000.
SCOUTING THE SAN DIEGO STATE AZTECS
The Aztecs (30-22) earned the Mountain West Conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament after going 9-3 in league play. San Diego State, which is making its eighth NCAA Tournament appearance, is 7-11 against teams that made the NCAA Tournament and 1-10 versus squads that are currently ranked in the Top 25 (lone win vs. Oregon State). The Aztecs are hitting .296 as a team with 58 home runs and 35 stolen bases, averaging 5.0 runs per game. Sophomore Hayley Miles is tops on the team with a .446 average, 20 home runs and 49 runs batted in. Five others are hitting better than .300, including sophomores Lorena Klopp (13) and Patrice Jackson (11), who each have double figures in homers. Junior Rebecca Arbino and senior Bailey Micetich have split the action in the circle. Arbino is 13-10 with a 2.09 ERA and 101 strikeouts in 154 innings, while Micetich is 15-7 with a 2.68 ERA and 170 strikeouts in 149 innings. The Bruins have won 55 straight against the Aztecs and lead the series 62-2, winning at SDSU 1-0 on February 19 (box score and recap on page 7). The teams have met four times in the NCAA Tournament, with UCLA winning all four matchups.
