UCLA Men's Water Polo Signs Four Talented Players for 2007

Los Angeles - The UCLA men's water polo program has signed four talented high school student-athletes to National Letters of Intent, head coach Adam Krikorian announced Wednesday. The four high school standouts committed to UCLA during the winter signing period and will report to campus in the fall of 2007.

"All four students are terrific athletes and are very coachable young men," Krikorian said. "Each one is very competitive, and they all have a strong desire to be successful. I look forward to the opportunity to coach these four players when they arrive to UCLA next season."

The 2007 recruiting class boasts four All-CIF selections and one two-time All-America honoree. Three of the high school standouts helped lead their respective schools to a CIF water polo championship.

Brett Hays
Fontana, Calif. (Bonita HS)
Attacker - 6-3, 215

Four-year water polo letterwinner at Bonita High School for head coach John Ashby...finished his high school career with three CIF Southern Section Division VI championships (2003-2005) and four Miramonte League titles (2003-2006)...was a three-time All-CIF honoree...named the Division VI Most Valuable Player in 2005...scored 370 goals over his four years...has played with the United States Youth National Team and Development Team; has played in Canada, Serbia, Croatia, Slovakia and Mexico City...earned 2006 fifth-team California-Hawaii All-America a junior (2005), led the Bonita Bearcats to their 14th-consecutive Miramont League title, posting a record of 20-13; Bonita defeated Rowland Heights, 17-14, to win the CIF Division VI title - the fifth-consecutive division championship for Bonita, and the first boys' water polo team in CIF history to win five-consecutive CIF titles since 1952.

Three-year water polo letterwinner at Sir Francis Drake High School...named the Marin County Athletic League Player of the Year in 2006...was a three-time first-team All-MCAL selection (2004-2006)...also named to the 2006 NCS Senior All-Star Team...earned 2006 first-team California-Hawaii All-America accolades...led Drake to the 2006 Chuck Metz Championship, defeating Marin Catholic 6-2...played for coach Andrew Morris with the Marin Water Polo Club...spent the summer of 2005 on the youth national team's summer European, Sean, swam for UC Santa Barbara and sister, Lauren, was a swimmer at UC Santa Cruz...competed on the U.S. Water Polo Cadet squad (for players 16 and younger)...played for the Pacific Zone Team in 2003 and 2004.

Atherton, Calif. (Menlo School)
Utility - 6-4, 190

Four-year water polo letterwinner at Menlo School for head coach Jack Bowen ...two-time first-team All-America selection (2005, 2006)...recorded the top three single-season goal totals in school history with 131 as a sophomore (2004), 147 as a junior (2005) and 133 as a senior (2006); previous Menlo School record holder was Grant Zider (UCLA letterwinner 2003-06)...also collected 61 steals, 30 assists and drew 65 exclusions his senior season...led Menlo to consecutive Central Coast Section Division II championships (2005, 2006); scored four goals in Menlo's 10-6 win over Sacred Heart Prep in the CCS Division II title game in 2006...named the San Jose Mercury News boys water polo player of the year...was the only junior in the nation to earn All-America accolades in a junior, tallied six goals in an 11-4 victory over Menlo-Atherton in the Peninsula Athletic League Tournament title game...finished his high school career with 466 goals...a talented student, posted a 3.8 GPA at Menlo School...shoots left-handed.

Three-year water polo letterwinner at Murrieta Valley High School for head coach Bryan Lynton...named the 2006 CIF Southern Section Division V Player of the a senior in 2006, helped guide Murrieta Valley to a 30-3 record and the CIF Southern Section Division V title, the first in school history...scored 111 goals and added 29 assists his senior season...named to the 2006 All-Southern California Water Polo Coaches Association Division V first team...also named the 2006 Riverside Press-Enterprise boys' water polo player of the year...earned 2006 second-team California-Hawaii All-America accolades...named the 2006 Californian's All-Valley boys' water polo player of the year...totaled 112 goals and 54 assists as a junior (2005)...led Murrieta Valley to the 2005 CIF-SS Division V championship game, an 8-7 loss to Riverside Poly...was a two-time member of the U.S. Youth National Team; spent the summer of 2005 on the youth national team's summer European tour.
