Second-ranked BYU swept third-ranked UCLA for the second straight night Saturday in MPSF play at Provo, UT.
BYU won 30-21, 30-23, 33-31 in one hour and 44 minutes before 5,366 in Smith Fieldhouse. The loss dropped UCLA's record to 2-3 overall, 0-2 in MPSF play. BYU improved to 4-0, 2-0.
Much like Friday night's match, the Bruins were unable to contain the Cougars' firepower. Bobby Stowell and Ivan Perez combined for 35 kills as the Cougars hit better than .500 in the first two games. The Cougars also controlled the net with Rodnei Santos leading the hosts with seven total blocks.
As a team, BYU hit .367 and held the Bruins to an attack percentage of .208. BYU outblocked UCLA 12-9.5 and served four aces to the Bruins' three.
UCLA's middle blockers enjoyed a solid night. Diefenbach led the Bruins with 13 kills (.375) and seven total blocks and Nichols added 11 kills (.647) and two block assists. Senior Paul George recorded seven kills and one block assist.
The Bruins continue their season-opening road trip next week with matches at UC Santa Barbara (Jan. 17) and at Cal State Northridge (Jan. 19).
