UCLA Women's Rowing Announces Seven Signees

Los Angeles - The UCLA women's rowing program has signed seven high school seniors to National Letters-of-Intent, head coach Amy Fuller-Kearney announced Wednesday. The class is highlighted by Elise Wilson (St. Ignatius Prep/San Francisco, Calif.), who helped lead the U.S. team to a second-place finish at the 2006 World Rowing Junior Championships.

The recruiting class features five student-athletes from California, one New Jersey native and one rower from Connecticut. All seven rowers will enroll at UCLA in the fall of 2007.

"We are very excited and encouraged by these seven fall signees," head coach Amy Fuller-Kearney said. "They reflect UCLA's continued ability to recruit top-level rowers from not only California, but also from the rest of the nation. They will all bring more talent and depth to our strong Bruin program."

Caroline Curson
San Diego, Calif. (Torrey Pines HS)
San Diego Rowing Club

Member of the San Diego Rowing Club since eighth grade...as a freshman, was a member of the SDRC lightweight four that captured the silver medal at the USRowing National Youth Championships...as a sophomore and junior, Curson rowed in the SDRC varsity quad...in 2005 that crew captured the USRowing Southwest Junior Regional Championship and a fourth-place finish at the USRowing nationals...in 2006, SDRC placed second in the regional championships and eighth at nationals...Curson's father, Phil, rowed at King's College School in London...her older brother rowed for SDRC and at the University of Puget Sound.

Kaitlin Davis
Orinda, Calif. (Miramonte HS)
Oakland Strokes

Currently in her fourth year rowing for the Oakland Strokes...career highlight is stroking the Oakland boat that captured the junior eight event at the 2006 San Diego Crew Classic... was one of two high school students on a collegiate research team that competed in the MIT International Genetically Engineered Machines Competition; their project, which won a first-place award, centered on genetically engineered RNA and DNA in E. coli bacteria...plans on majoring in biology at UCLA.

Rachel LaBella
Princeton Junction, N.J. (West Windsor - Plainsboro HS South)
Mercer Junior Rowing Club

As a freshman and sophomore, swam the 50- and 100-freestyle Plainsboro HS South...helped lead the swimming team to consecutive county championships, a second-place finish at the state championship as a freshman, and a third-place finish at the state championship as a sophomore...in the spring of her first year in high school, she joined the Mercer Junior Rowing Club...during the 2006 racing year, she rowed in the five seat of the MJRC girls eight that won the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic District Championship; that crew passed up their invitation to the USRowing National Youth Championships to compete at the Women's Henley Regatta in England...MJRC placed second in the racing at Henley-On-Thames...in the fall of 2006, the Mercer crew placed seventh in the youth eight event at the Head of the Charles.

Oakland, Calif. (Bishop O'Dowd HS)
Oakland Strokes

As a freshman and sophomore, competed on the swimming and water polo teams at Bishop O'Dowd HS...helped guide the swimming team to league championships both seasons...led the water polo team to a second-place league finish as a freshman and to the league title as a sophomore...began rowing for the Oakland Strokes the following year and was coached by UCLA rowing alumna Beth Anderson...competed in the top Oakland novice boat, placing fifth at the USRowing Southwest Junior Regional Championship...rowed on the varsity squad as a senior.

Erica Smith
Darien, Conn. (Darien HS)
Maritime Rowing Club

Began rowing for the Maritime Rowing Club in Norwalk, Conn. in 2004-05...has advanced to the varsity squad and has showed strong improvement in her 2000-meter ergometer score...is a state-certified EMT with Post 53, responding to medical emergencies as part of Post 53's student-staffed ambulance crew...Post 53 has provided the city of Darien with emergency medical services for over 30 years.

Molly Wachtel
Menlo, Calif. (Menlo Atherton HS)
Stanford Junior Crew

Competed on the Menlo Atherton HS cross-country and track teams as a freshman and sophomore... concentrated her track efforts on the 100-, 200- and 400-meters...helped the track program to consecutive league titles...began rowing for the Stanford Junior Crew program near the end of her first year in high school....has showed great improvement both in technique and fitness, having rowed in the team's first four as a junior and senior...the Stanford Junior Crew placed seventh at the 2005 Head of the the Charles Regatta and 12th at the 2006 Head of the Charles...a talented scholar-athlete, has earned National Merit Semifinalist accolades.

Elise Wilson
San Francisco, Calif. (St. Ignatius Prep)
St. Ignatius Rowing Team/U.S. Junior National Team

Currently in her fourth season on the St. Ignatius Prep rowing team...competed in the summer of 2006 as a member of the United States Junior National Team eight, leading the crew to a silver medal-winning finish at the world championships in Amsterdam; the second-place finish tied the mark for the highest-ever U.S. finish in the girls' eight at the junior world championships...prior to going overseas, Wilson and her crew won the USRowing National Championship in the elite eight in Indianapolis, Ind...her personal best over the standard 2000-meter distance on an ergometer is 6 minutes, 46.7 seconds...in February 2004, placed second at the CRASH-B World Indoor Rowing Championship...plans on a return trip to Boston in the winter (2006) for that competition...will also attend the USRowing Junior National Team High Performance Camp in Seattle, Wash., at the end of November 2006...a three-year basketball lettwinner at St. Ignatius; led the Wildcats to league and section titles in 2005-06; St. Ignatius was a Northern California regional championship finalist.
