IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team finished third at the UC Irvine Invitational over the weekend, defeating No. 5 Hawai'i, 7-6, in the third-place match on Sunday afternoon. Earlier in the day, the Bruins dropped a 9-8 decision to No. 2 USC in a semifinal match.
Senior Priscilla Orozco scored five goals in the loss to USC before adding four goals in UCLA's win over Hawai'i. Orozco led the Bruins with 12 goals in four UCI Invitational contests and helped the Bruins avenge last Thursday's 8-6 overtime loss to Hawai'i.
In the third-place match, the Bruins claimed a 2-1 lead by the end of the first quarter and pushed their margin to 5-3 by halftime. Each team added one goal in the third quarter. Hawai'i outscored UCLA in the final period, 2-1, allowing the Bruins to earn a one-goal victory.
Orozco led UCLA with four goals in that win, as senior Megan Burmeister, junior KK Clark and sophomore Brooke Martin each scored one goal. Freshman goalkeeper Sami Hill recorded eight saves in the cage.
Earlier in the day, the Bruins nearly overcame an early deficit against USC, but their rally fell short in a 9-8 loss. USC raced to a 5-2 lead after the first quarter, and the Trojans' cushion swelled to 8-4 at halftime. Each team scored once in the third period. UCLA outscored USC, 3-0, in the final period to pull the Trojans' lead to one goal.
Orozco netted five goals for the second time this season, having accomplished the feat on Feb. 19 in a 7-5 victory at home against UC Irvine.
In the loss to USC, Hill netted a season-high-tying 12 saves for the second time this season. She also netted 12 stops against Cal State Northridge (Jan. 23) at the Michigan Invitational.
UCLA returns to action against No. 9 Arizona State on Saturday, March 5, in Tempe, Ariz. Game time is slated for 11 a.m. (PT)/12 p.m. (MT). The Bruins will play Cal Baptist at 1:30 p.m. (PT)/2:30 p.m. (MT) at Arizona State later that afternoon.
