NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team took advantage of six goals in the first quarter to defeat No. 8 Long Beach State, 16-6, in a quarterfinal contest at the UC Irvine Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Junior Ben Hohl led the Bruins (12-2) with three goals at Corona del Mar High School.
The victory over Long Beach State (5-5) allows UCLA to advance to a semifinal match against No. 3 USC (14-1) on Sunday. Game time at UC Irvine's Anteater Pool is 12 p.m. The winner of Sunday's UCLA-USC showdown will advance to the UCI Invitational championship match, slated for 5:20 p.m.
Against the 49ers, UCLA scored 10 goals in the first half to claim a 10-4 lead at halftime. The Bruins outscored Long Beach State by a 3-1 margin in each of the final two quarters.
Long Beach State's Matt Farrington and Jeff Greenwood led the 49ers with two goals each.
Long Beach State advanced to face UCLA after having edged No. 17 Navy in overtime, 9-8, earlier in the day.
