Sophomore Stephanie Kono (Honolulu, HI/Punahou HS) of the UCLA women's golf team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Apr. 5-11.
Kono, who was also named the GolfWeek Player of the Week, won the PING/ASU Invitational individual title on Sunday by making a 50-foot birdie putt on the final hole to win by a stroke. She shot a 66 (-6) in the third round that was the low round of the tournament and moved her from a tie for fourth place, four shots behind the leader, to the top of the podium. Kono's winning putt also enabled the Bruins to overcome a 12-shot deficit in the final round and win by a stroke over ASU on its home course. The team title was UCLA's second of the spring and will keep them atop the national rankings for another week. Kono's individual title was the third of her career and dropped her season stroke average to 71.2. In 20 rounds this season, she is 13-under par. She also boasts 13 rounds under par and six rounds under 70 this season. She entered the tournament ranked seventh nationally and was just named to the 2010 U.S. Curtis Cup team.
This is Kono's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of her career.
