LOS ANGELES - Senior Ben Hohl and sophomore Griffin White each tallied three goals to lead the No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team past No. 8 Long Beach State, 11-5, in an MPSF match at Spieker Aquatics Center on Sunday afternoon.
The conference victory helped the Bruins (15-3, 4-1 MPSF) extend their win streak to a season-high seven games.
The visiting 49ers (7-10, 0-4 MPSF) were led by Taylor Clute's three goals.
Hohl recorded his 12th multiple-goal effort of the season and his fourth consecutive game with at least three goals. The senior from Atherton, Calif., moved into a tie for eighth place on the school's career goals list, equaling Adam Wright's 138-goal total (1997-2000).
Each team traded two goals in the opening period. Clute put Long Beach State ahead, 1-0, on a goal with 6:22 to play. Hennessy helped UCLA tie the contest at 3:22, scoring on the counter-attack. Barabino fired a backhanded shot from two meters, pushing the Bruins ahead 2-1 with 2:34 left in the first quarter. Shane Luth scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity for Long Beach State with 45 seconds left in the opening frame, tying the game at 2-2.
White scored his first goal of the day on an assist from Wendt with 6:38 left in the second quarter, giving the Bruins a 3-2 lead and one they would not relinquish. Hohl converted on a power-play opportunity with 5:28 left in the frame before Clute added his second goal at 5:07, cutting UCLA's advantage to 4-3.
Hohl answered with another 6-on-5 goal before Long Beach State's Nick Rascon countered with an extra-man score (3:21), slicing the Bruins' margin to 5-4. UCLA entered halftime ahead, 6-4, after Samuels scored with 2:02 to play before the intermission.
The Bruins outscored the 49ers, 4-1, in the third quarter to take a commanding 10-5 cushion. Wendt slammed home a shot after taking the entry pass from White on a 6-on-5 opportunity with 7:10 remaining. Consecutive goals by White at 6:09 and 5:01 put the Bruins ahead, 9-4. After Clute's third goal of the day (3:24) for Long Beach State, Kuga scored with 24 seconds left in the period to secure a 10-5 lead.
Freshman goalkeeper James Hartshorne recorded seven saves before sophomore Matt Rapacz entered with 4:31 to play in the fourth quarter. Rapacz was credited with one save. Long Beach State goalkeeper Matthew Kubeck finished with seven saves.
