LOS ANGELES - Stanford senior Anne Yelsey notched a straight-set victory over UCLA's Tracy Lin in the deciding singles match, as the top-ranked Stanford women's tennis team pulled out a 4-3 victory over a shorthanded Bruin squad at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Friday. UCLA, which lost to Stanford by the same score back on Feb. 17 in the Bay Area, falls to 13-7 overall and 4-2 in the Pac-10. The Cardinal improve to 18-1 and 5-0 in conference play.

Stanford began the afternoon by clawing out a hard-fought doubles point with victories at court Nos. 1 and 3. Although the Bruins struck first with an 8-5 win at court No. 2, the Cardinal quickly answered with an 8-6 win at court No. 1. The point was clinched at the No. 3 position, where Whitney Deason and Theresa Logar posted a 9-8(3) win over UCLA's Lin and Anna-Viktoria Lind.

Following doubles, the Bruins would actually take a 2-1 lead in the match, as Ashley Joelson (court #3) and Stephanie Wetmore (court #6) rolled to easy victories. Joelson's opponent, Celia Durkin, retired from the match with an injury after losing the first set 6-1. Wetmore lost just three games en route to a 6-0, 6-3 win over Lejla Hodzic.

Stanford then won the next two matches to take a 3-2 lead, as Logar, ranked No. 16 nationally, posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 22 Riza Zalameda at court No. 1. That match was followed by court No. 5, where No. 73 Lindsay Burdette was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Lind.

UCLA's Elizabeth Lumpkin kept the Bruins in it, as she upset the 76th-ranked Deason, 6-2, 6-4 at court No. 4. All attention then turned to court No. 2, where Lin and Yelsey were locked in a tight second set. Despite erasing a 4-1 deficit to eventually make it 4-4, Lin couldn't hold on, as Yelsey clinched the match with a 7-6(6), 6-4 win.

UCLA was playing Friday's match without the services of two of its top players, as Yasmin Schnack and Alex McGoodwin were unable to play due to injury.

UCLA looks to rebound tomorrow, hosting No. 8 Cal beginning at Noon.
