2016 NFL Draft
Rick Neuheisel Named OCYSF Sportsman of the Year

Feb. 9, 2011

UCLA head football coach Rick Neuheisel will be honored as the 2011 Sportsman of the Year when the Orange County Youth Sports Foundation (OCYSF, www.ocysf.org) roasts him at a special banquet on Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa beginning at 6:00 pm.

Neuheisel is entering his fourth year as UCLA's head football coach. He owns a 81-52 career record in 11 years as a head coach.

"We are very excited to have Coach Neuheisel," said Tom Johnson, President of the Orange County Youth Sports Foundation (OCYSF). "He is a great speaker and promises to make the evening memorable for all of those who attend."

As a player, Neuheisel began his collegiate career at UCLA (1979-83) as a walk-on. He earned the starting quarterback job during his senior season and led the Bruins to the Pac-10 title after a 0-3-1 start.

Since 1971, the Orange County Youth Sports Foundation has enjoyed a proud tradition of celebrating the accomplishments of sports figures as a means of raising funds for boys and girls in the Orange County, CA community. Since its inception, the Foundation has donated well over a $1.5 million dollars to youth sports in the county. This includes scholarships to college bound scholar-athletes, field trips and improvements to local sports facilities.

Neuheisel becomes the OCYSF's 38th honoree to take the podium as the night's honoree. At the 2010 OCYSF banquet the group honored New York Jets Quarterback and former USC star Mark Sanchez. Past OCYSF honorees include local and national sports greats like Tom Lasorda, Jerry West, Pete Carroll, Bill Walsh and Peter Ueberroth.

Neuheisel is the first college football coach honored by OCYSF since Pete Carroll in 2004. He is the first Bruin honored by the group since former UCLA head football coach Terry Donahue was roasted in 1996.

About the Orange County Youth Sports Foundation
Originally named the "Sports Celebrities," a group of local Orange County residents held a banquet held each year at the Saddleback Inn in Santa Ana to have fun and raise money for young people. The founders include Paul Clearly, Bruce Gelker, Bob Hoyt, Chuck Potter and Paul Salata and their first honoree was race car driver Dan Gurney. Later the group changed its name to the current moniker The Orange County Youth Sports Foundation. Today, more than 45 volunteers sit on the OCYSF board and help make an impact in the lives of young people in the community. The Orange County Sportsman of the Year Award was established in 1971 by the Foundation to honor individuals who serve as an inspiration to youth and who are leaders in both their sport and their community. The Orange County Youth Sports Foundation would also like to recognize The First American Corporation and Westar Associates for their longtime support.
