Jan. 7, 2008

UCLA soccer players Valerie Henderson and Mike Zaher have been selected to the 2007 NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-America team. Henderson was named to the first team, while Zaher earned second-team honors.

This is the second NSCAA Scholar All-America honor for Henderson, who was a second-team selection in 2006. She recently completed a remarkable four-year career, ranking No. 1 all-time at UCLA in victories (76), shutouts (38), and goals against average (0.63). She owned a 20-2-2 overall record in 2007, starting every match for the Pac-10 Champion Bruins. UCLA reached the NCAA College Cup and won the Pac-10 title every year of her career, highlighted by trips to the NCAA Final in 2004 and 2005. Henderson, who was also named to the ESPN The Magazine All-District VIII Academic First Team, holds a 3.49 gpa and is majoring in English with a minor in Spanish.

Zaher, who holds a 3.43 cumulative grade point average in Political Science, is just the second player in UCLA men's soccer history to receive NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-America honors, joining Sam George, who received the honor in 1990 and 1991. Zaher was also a first-team Pac-10 All-Academic selection this season and has earned All-Pac-10 first-team and NSCAA/adidas All-Far West third team honors in each of the last two seasons. Zaher finished the 2007 season ranked second on the team in goals (4) and assists (3) and third in scoring with 11 points.
