La Jolla, Calif. - UCLA men's tennis players Haythem Abid and Nick Meister won six straight matches over the weekend to capture the title at the 120th Pacific Coast Doubles Championships held at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
Abid and Meister, the tournament's No. 9 seeded team, defeated eighth-seeded Christoph Muller/Tobias Scheil, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in Sunday's final. The Bruin duo also posted a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory over the top-seeded team of Robert Farah/Steve Johnson in the round of 16.
The only other Bruin tandem to turn in a solid showing in La Jolla was the pairing of Bruin assisant coach Kris Kwinta and volunteer assistant coach Chris Surapol, as the duo advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Muller/Scheil, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
The Pacific Coast Doubles Championships is annually one of the the top doubles tournaments in the country, and it does not count as part of the college season. The tournament features some of the top open players in the country, many of whom are former pros, past and current college players, and top-level juniors.
