LEXINGTON, Ky. - The AVCA Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll was released on Monday and UCLA came in at 11th in the first rankings of the year. The Bruins earned 903 points and were one of five Pac-12 teams ranked in the Top 11 of the poll.
Four-time defending national champion Penn State was first and received 54 first-place votes, with five other first-place nods going to USC, which was second in the poll. The other first-place vote went to California, which was ranked third. After Texas and Nebraska, Pac-12 squads Stanford and Washington were the next two teams at sixth and seventh, respectively. Rounding out the Top 10 were Illinois, Florida and Hawai'i.
If the preseason rankings are any indicator, the Bruins will get a stern test during the second weekend of play at the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic (Sept. 1-4). UCLA will face 22nd-ranked Long Beach State, #21 Ohio State and 10th-ranked Hawai'i.
Along with USC, Cal, Stanford and Washington ranking in the Top 10, Oregon (28th) and Arizona (34th) were among others receiving votes in the preseason poll. Pepperdine, another UCLA opponent, just missed out on the Top 25 at 26th.
