STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 5 UCLA women's water polo dropped a 13-3 decision to No. 2 USC in the third-place match of the Stanford Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Stanford's Avery Pool. The Bruins (5-3) received two goals from freshman Brooke Martin and one from junior Grace Reynolds.
USC (5-1) netted two goals from five players - Kristen Dronberger, Patricia Jancso, Alexandra Kiss, Kelly Lucas and Sarah Van Norman.
The Trojans led from the start, assuming a 4-0 lead after the first quarter. USC outscored UCLA by a 4-1 margin in the second period to claim an 8-1 cushion by halftime. Each team traded one goal in the third period, before the Trojans outscored UCLA, 4-1, in the final quarter.
Sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Dement finished with 10 saves. USC's Tumua Anae netted 11 saves in the cage.
UCLA returns to action against No. 12 Cal State Northridge in the Bruins' home opener on Saturday, Feb. 13. Game time at UCLA's Spieker Aquatics Center is 4 p.m.
