UCLA Rowing Announces 12 Signees for 2009

LOS ANGELES - The UCLA rowing program has signed 12 talented high school rowers to National Letters of Intent, head coach Amy Fuller Kearney announced this week. The group of 12 student-athletes will report to campus in the fall of 2008.

"We are very excited and encouraged by these 12 fall signees," Fuller Kearney said. "They reflect UCLA's ability to recruit elite rowers from not only California, but also from the rest of the country. We look forward to their contributions in the years to come."

The group of 12 signees includes eight high school rowers from California, one from New Jersey, one from New York, one from North Carolina, and one from Connecticut.

Currently in her second year of rowing for the Oakland Strokes...as a junior, rowed in the Oakland Strokes' top novice eight and four crews...novice four placed fourth at the USRowing Southwest Region Junior Championships...as a senior, has continued to improve; will compete throughout the spring on the Oakland Strokes varsity squad...prior to transitioning to rowing, spent her freshman and sophomore years on the Miramonte JV basketball team...also has a long history of swimming, beginning in elementary school.

Long Beach, Calif. (L.B. Wilson HS)
Long Beach Junior Crew

Rows for the Long Beach Junior Crew...program capped an extremely successful year last season winning gold medals in the women's eight at the USRowing Southwest Region Junior Championships and, subsequently, at the USRowing Youth National Championships...with her onboard, the five returning members of the national championship crew won the youth four event at this fall's prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston...has been very active in the USRowing Women's Junior National Team system...in the summer of 2007, she competed on the High Performance Team that trained and competed in Berlin, Germany...recently attended the junior team's high performance camp in Texas; is considered a strong candidate to represent the United States in the 2008 junior world championships in Austria.

Leslie Chou
Orinda, Calif. (Miramonte HS)
Oakland Strokes

Has served as coxswain for Oakland Strokes through four years of high school...last year, in addition to coxing for the Oakland Strokes' women's crews, coxed the Oakland Strokes men's lightweight four; led that boat to a bronze medal at the regional championships and advanced to the Youth National Championships...selected to attend the USRowing Junior National Team Development Camp in the summer of 2007; at the development camp, coxed a number of camp entries at the Philadelphia Independence Day Regatta and at the USRowing Club National Championships.

Mercer Junior Rowing Club

Currently in her fourth year rowing for the Mercer Junior Rowing Club; has been in their top boat for three years...as a sophomore, helped lead Mercer to a first-place finish at the USRowing Northeast/Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships; Mercer passed up an invitation to the USRowing Youth National Championships in favor of a trip to England...in England, guided her crew to a top finish at the Reading Amateur Regatta and placed second at the Women's Henley Regatta...with her onboard, Mercer Junior Rowing Club has had great success in the youth eight event at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta...placed seventh as a sophomore, sixth as a junior and fourth as a senior...in the summer of 2007, participated as a member of the USRowing Women's Junior National Team Development camp; raced in the Independence Day Regatta and at the USRowing Club National Championships.

Nor Cal Crew

Currently in her second year rowing with the Nor Cal Crew in Redwood City, Calif...program is headed by accomplished UCLA graduate Mike Still...rowing as a novice last season, led her crew to a gold medal-winning finish at the novice eight race at the USRowing Southwest Region Championships...in the fall of 2007, competed on the Nor Cal eight crew that placed second overall in the youth eight event at the Head of the Charles Regatta...continues developing skills; has had a dramatic improvement in long distance ergometer performances this fall.

Erin Grajewski
Statesville, N.C. (Choate Rosemary Hall [CT])
Choate Rosemary Hall

Has prepped for four years at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Conn...has guided Choate's crews to great success in her four years, including strong finishes in the Founder's Day Regatta and the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association Championships...also raced with the Boston Rowing Club summer program...rowing is a spring-only sport at Choate...has also played basketball at Choate, serving as team captain...travelled extensively, including studying abroad in Santander, Spain.

Ariel Handler
Newport Beach, Calif. (Corona del Mar HS)
Newport Aquatic Center

Lived in Boston during her freshman and sophomore seasons; coxed for Community Rowing, Incorporated...coxed the CRI second eight to a gold medal-winning finish at the 2006 Northeast/Mid-Atlantic District Championships...also steered CRI's junior B four to a second-place finish at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta...since moving to California, has served as the top coxswain for the Newport Aquatic Center junior team...in 2007, the Newport Aquatic Center's first eight finished fourth at the USRowing Southwest Region championships; went on to place 12th at the USRowing Youth National Championships...father and two uncles attended UCLA; grandmother taught at UCLA.

Katonah, N.Y. (Middlesex School [MA])
Middlesex School

Attends the Middlesex School in Concord, Mass...a four-year member of the Middlesex School rowing team and will serve as team co-captain in 2008...helped lead Middlesex to the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association (NEIRA) team championship in 2006 when she rowed in the gold medal-winning third four...also rowed in Middlesex's second four in 2007, and the team's bronze medal performance helped Middlesex place second in the NEIRA team competition...rowed in the Middlesex School four at the 2007 Henley Women's Regatta in 2007; that crew advanced to the final race...also is a four-year member of Middlesex's squash team; serves as team captain this season...played soccer as a freshman and ran cross-country as a sophomore and a senior...serves as a senior proctor and alumni ambassador.

Last year, along with fellow signee Ariel Handler, was part of the top eight that qualified through the southwest region regatta with a fourth place finish and raced at the USRowing Youth National Championships in Cincinnati (crew placed 12th)...serving again as a member of the NAC's top eight as they look toward a return trip to the national championships...will follow in the footsteps of many NAC alumnae who have continued on to UCLA...comes from a family of avid sailors; has sailed competitively in numerous boat classifications.

Sculled with the New Canaan High School program as a freshman and sophomore...quadruple sculls crew won its regional championships and advanced to make the B final at the youth national championship...as a junior, started rowing with the Maritime Rowing Club, one of the top junior programs in the country...in 2007, helped lead MRC to the regional championship in the women's eight; advanced to a silver medal placing at the national championships...part of the MRC first eight, found great success this fall at races including the Head of the Charles and the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival...mother, Jane Musky, rowed for Boston University and was a collegiate national champion....uncle attended UCLA as an undergraduate...grandfather is supporter of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television.

Marina Aquatic Center

Began rowing as a junior with the California Yacht Program...in the summer of 2007, rowed with the CYC's sculling group at the USRowing Club National Championships...now rows for the Marina Aquatic Center and has competed in the top eight for the MAC program all fall...led her crew to a first-place finish at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival in November 2007, a feat that garnered national rowing attention...prior to her rowing career, played basketball and tennis...father, Douglas Pollock, played baseball at UCLA...mother, Donna Colin, graduated from UCLA and now works for the UCLA School of Law.

Long Beach, Calif. (Los Alamitos HS)
Long Beach Junior Crew

In her third year with the Long Beach Junior Crew...was in the top boat of the Long Beach Junior Crew for all of the 2006-07 season, as well as this season...has won gold medals at the Long Beach Invitational, Newport Autumn Rowing Festival, Head of the Charles Regatta, USRowing Southwest Regional Championships and USRowing Youth National Championships...will join two current UCLA rowers who are LBJC alumnae - sophomore Lauren Counter and freshman Carolyn Johnson.
