LOS ANGELES - The fourth-ranked Bruins pounded out 10 hits and a pair of home runs in an 8-0, six-inning victory in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader, but lost 7-2 in the nightcap to UC Santa Barbara at Easton Stadium. Junior Kaila Shull drove in five of the Bruins' 10 runs in the twinbill.

The Bruins move to 25-4 with the split, while the Gauchos are now 14-12.

In game one, Shull and senior Amanda Kamekona accounted for all eight Bruin runs batted in. Kamekona went 3-for-4 with five RBI, while Shull was 2-for-4 with three runs batted in. Freshman Andrea Harrison also had two hits for the Bruins, who had 10 as a team. Sophomore Donna Kerr improved to 14-3 on the season, giving up four hits while striking out three.

The Bruins scored a pair in the second to go up 2-0. Andrea Harrison walked to open the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Julie Burney. Following a single to left by junior Megan Langenfeld, sophomore Amy Crawford was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Sophomore Monica Harrison then tapped a ball to second, but Christine Ramos came home to force the younger Harrison for the second out of the inning. Kamekona had the big two-out hit though, singling up the middle to plate freshman pinch-runner Marti Reed and Crawford to make it 2-0.

Kerr was in control in the circle, allowing only singles in the first, second, third and fifth. She retired the order in the fourth with two strikeouts and went 1-2-3 in the sixth.

In the sixth, the Bruins used the long ball to invoke the mercy rule. Langenfeld was hit by a pitch to start the inning and was pinch-run for by sophomore Grace Murray. Freshman Dani Yudin reached on a pinch-hit single to center, and one out later, Kamekona launched her sixth home run of the season to left to put the Bruins up 5-0. The Bruins put two more on base on a hit by pitch of sophomore Katie Schroeder and a single to left by sophomore GiOnna DiSalvatore. Shull then ended things, belting her eighth homer of the year to left-center to give UCLA the 8-0 win.

MeLinda Matsumoto (2-5) started for the Gauchos and allowed five runs, eight hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings. Lindsey Correa faced three batters, giving up two hits and three runs.

In the second game, both teams scored two in the first inning. Ramos and Jessica Ziegler had back-to-back singles to start the game, and after a sacrifice by Tiffany Wright, Jessica Beristianos singled to center to score both runners and put the Gauchos on top 2-0.

In the bottom of the frame, Kamekona led off with a bunt single and stole second. Schroeder then walked, with Kamekona moving to third on ball four. After Schroeder swiped second, Shull stroked a one-out single to right to even the game at two.

The Gauchos took the lead for good with two runs in the third. Ramos and Ziegler again led off the inning with singles and Wright doubled home Ramos to make it 3-2. Ziegler then scored when Beristianos reached on a fielder's choice to put UCSB up 4-2.

In the fifth, a leadoff homer by Wright to left made it 5-2. The Gauchos added two more in the sixth on a two-run double by Ramos that scored Mary Episcopo and Brooke Putich.

Redshirt sophomore Whitney Baker (8-1) started for the Bruins and allowed six hits and four runs with three strikeouts in two-plus innings. Kerr tossed the last five frames, fanning 10 for her eighth double-figure strikeout game of the season. She allowed three runs, three hits and three walks.

Krista Cobb went the distance for the Gauchos to improve to 8-3 on the season, allowing six hits, two runs and three walks with three strikeouts. Ramos went 3-for-3 with two RBI, Wright and Ziegler each had two hits and Beristianos had three runs batted in.

The Bruins open up Pac-10 play on Friday at Stanford at 7 p.m. Gametracker and live audio will be available at UCLABruins.com.
