TEMPE, ARIZ. - The third-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team improved to 19-0 (6-0 Pac-10) with a 30-21, 30-26, 30-28 victory at Arizona State on Saturday night. The Bruins were led by Ali Daley who had a team-high 12 kills and Nana Meriwether who put together nine kills, three solo blocks and five block assists for a team-high 14.5 points in the match.
UCLA out-blocked the Sun Devils by a 14-5 margin, out-dug them 49-44 and had a .353 team attack percentage to Arizona State's .152. UCLA senior co-captain Colby Lyman had nine kills on 11 error-free swings for a .818 attack percentage. She added a team-high 14 digs and four block assists and contributed the team's only ace of the evening.
In the opening game of the match, the Bruins used an early three-point run behind the service of Ali Daley to build a 5-2 lead and never looked back. UCLA led throughout the second game of the match, scoring the first point on a Meriwether kill and followed with a Lyman ace and two ASU attack errors to build a 5-0 lead en route to a 30-26 win.
Game three saw the Sun Devils take an early 16-10 lead before the Bruins started to chip away. UCLA did not tie the score until the 25-25 mark, capitalizing on an ASU attack error as part of a five-point run that powered the Bruins to a 27-25 lead. ASU countered to tie the match at 28-28, but UCLA used a Meriwether kill and the 27th attack error of the evening from ASU to put the match away with a 30-28 third game win.
The Bruins return to action with home games against top-10 foes Cal and Stanford on Thursday and Friday nights, respectively. Both matches are scheduled for 7 pm starts in Pauley Pavilion.
