UCLA Against San Diego State
The Bruins won the only match between these two schools, posting a 9-4 victory at San Diego State on Feb. 18. KK Clark and Becca Dorst each scored two goals in that contest, while Caitlin Dement recorded 12 saves in the cage. UCLA outscored SDSU by a 3-1 margin in each of the first two quarters to lead, 6-2, at halftime.
How We Got Here
UCLA earned the No. 2 seed in the MPSF Tournament after having gone 5-2 in conference games during the regular season. UCLA and USC finished in a tie for second place, with the Bruins earning the tiebreak by virtue of a 6-5 win at USC on March 3. Stanford locked up the No. 1 seed with an 8-1 victory at UCLA last Saturday.
Senior KK Clark leads UCLA with 47 goals and 36 steals through 21 matches. Clark ranks fourth among MPSF field players, averaging 2.24 goals per match. The native of Atherton, Calif., has scored in 20 of the Bruins' 21 matches, totaling at least two goals in 15 games. Clark scored a season-high five goals in a 10-6 victory at UC Irvine on Saturday, April 14.
Dishing the Assists
Junior Gisselle Naranjo enters the MPSF Tournament leading UCLA with 27 assists. She has scored 11 goals, while also collecting 23 steals and 10 field blocks. Seniors KK Clark and Hannah Sebenaler each have tallied 17 assists.
Leading the Way on Defense
Backed by goalkeeper Caitlin Dement, UCLA has recorded a 5.33 goals against average through 21 matches, the second-lowest mark in the MPSF. Dement's 5.25 goals against average also ranks second in the conference. The senior from Chino, Calif., has tallied a season-high 14 saves in three matches this season.
UCLA's Tournament History
The Bruins have advanced to the title match of the MPSF Tournament each of the last two seasons. UCLA defeated Stanford, 7-6, in the championship game in 2010 and fell to California, 7-6, in the first-place match last season. The winner of the MPSF Tournament earns an automatic bid to the eight-team NCAA Tournament (May 11-13).
Player of the Week Selections
KK Clark has twice captured MPSF Player of the Week acclaim, while Caitlin Dement secured the weekly honor on March 5. Clark was named MPSF Player of the Week after UCLA went 3-0 at the Michigan Invitational (Jan. 21-22) and after leading UCLA to the UCI Invitational title on Feb. 26. Dement recorded 11 saves in UCLA's 6-5 win at USC on March 3 to earn the weekly award.
