May 9, 2009

Box Score

LOS ANGELES - Freshman Andrea Harrison celebrated her 19th birthday with a 3-for-3 performance, sophomore Katie Schroeder also had three hits and sophomore Donna Kerr hurled a two-hitter, as the second-ranked Bruins shutout Stanford for the second consecutive game, 8-0 in six innings, on Saturday at Easton Stadium.

The Pac-10 champion Bruins finish up the regular season at 41-9 and 16-5 in conference, while the Cardinal fall to 44-9 and 13-8 in league.

The top two hitters in the UCLA lineup, Schroeder and Harrison, went a combined 6-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI. Harrison had a pair of doubles and a sacrifice hit. The Bruins had 12 hits as a team.

Kerr improved to 18-6 on the season and has allowed only one unearned run in her last 23 2/3 innings. She walked two and struck out four.

The Bruins scored in the first thanks to a Stanford error. Schroeder led off with a single up the middle, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Harrison and moved to third on a groundout by junior Megan Langenfeld. Sophomore GiOnna DiSalvatore then hit a fly ball to right fielder Maya Burns, but it bounced off her glove, allowing Schroeder to score to make it 1-0.

UCLA batted around in the fifth, scoring six times to break it open. Sophomore Amy Crawford led off with a single to right, moved to second on a sacrifice by sophomore Monica Harrison and to third on a wild pitch. Schroeder then singled up the middle to bring in Crawford and make it 2-0. After a single by Andrea Harrison put two runners on, Langenfeld doubled to left-center to plate Schroeder and put the Bruins up 3-0. DiSalvatore followed with a single up the middle to bring in Harrison and sophomore pinch-runner Lauren Mirabal to make it 5-0. One out later, junior Kaila Shull launched her 11th home run of the season to center field to increase the lead to 7-0.

The Bruins invoked the mercy rule in the sixth. With one out, Monica Harrison singled to left-center and was pinch-run for by sophomore Grace Murray. After Schroeder walked, Andrea Harrison doubled to left-center to bring home Murray and give the Bruins the 8-0 victory.

Kerr retired the first seven batters she faced before hitting Jenna Becerra in the third. She allowed only five baserunners and struck out one in each of the last four innings.

Ashley Chinn (13-3) took the loss for the Cardinal, allowing eight runs (seven earned), 12 hits and one walk with four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Alissa Haber and Ashley Hansen had the only two Stanford hits.

The Bruins find out where their postseason journey begins on Sunday at 7 p.m. when the NCAA Softball Selection Show airs on ESPNU.
