LOS ANGELES - Senior Priscilla Orozco scored a career-high five goals to lead the No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team past No. 11 UC Irvine, 7-5, in a non-conference match Saturday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Center.
The Bruins (13-1) registered their seventh-consecutive victory, playing their first game at home since a non-conference 11-4 win over Long Beach State on Saturday, Jan. 29.
UC Irvine was led by Jessy Cardy's two goals, also taking advantage of one goal each from Cortney Collyer, Caitlin Haskell and Danielle Warde.
The visiting Anteaters (6-3) took the game's first lead with a goal from Cardey on a power play at 5:22 before UCLA tied the contest, 1-1, on Orozco's first goal of the game (5:02). The Bruins took a 2-1 lead with four minutes to go in the first quarter on a goal from Orozco and entered the second quarter tied, 2-2.
The Bruins outscored UC Irvine in the second quarter by a 2-1 margin to claim a 4-3 halftime lead. In the second period, UCLA received goals from Martin (6:05) and Orozco (0:15).
UCLA led the rest of the contest, pushing its advantage to as many as three goals (7-4) after Orozco found the back of the cage on a 6-on-5 opportunity with 4:05 remaining in the contest.
Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Dement tallied eight saves in the cage for UCLA. UC Irvine's Lauren Davis netted five saves in goal for the Anteaters.
UCLA returns to action with its first MPSF contest of the season against No. 5 Hawai'i on Thursday, Feb. 24. Game time at Spieker Aquatics Center is slated for 6 p.m.
