Ninth-Ranked Bruins Unable to Find Their Bats in Loss to #1 ASU

April 17, 2011

Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. - Sophomore B.B. Bates produced a pair of singles, but ninth-ranked UCLA was held to four hits for the third straight game, as top-ranked Arizona State posted a 5-0 victory on Sunday at Farrington Stadium.

The Bruins fall to 29-9 overall and 5-4 in Pac-10 play, while the Sun Devils improve to 39-5 and 6-3 in league action.

Senior GiOnna DiSalvatore's double and freshman Alyssa Tiumalu's single were the only other hits for the Bruins. In the circle, senior Donna Kerr started and allowed a run, three hits and a walk in 2 2/3 innings with one strikeout. Junior Aleah Macon entered in relief of Kerr and gave up four runs, five hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 3 1/3 frames.

The Sun Devils grabbed the lead in the bottom of the third when Mandy Urfer started off the inning with a solo homer down the left-field line to put the home squad up 1-0.

Arizona State added another in the fourth. With one out, Annie Lockwood doubled and was pinch-run for by Bailey Wigness, who came home on an RBI single to right-center by Christina Zambrana to make it 2-0.

The Bruins, who had a runner get to second in the second and third innings, had their best chance in the fifth. Bates led off with a single to center, and two outs later, DiSalvatore roped a double to left-center to put a pair in scoring position. But Arizona State pitcher Dallas Escobedo struck out freshman Kellie Fox to end the threat. Escobedo would retire seven of the final eight batters she faced following the DiSalvatore double.

Arizona State broke it open with three in the sixth on a pair of home runs. With one out, Lockwood connected to right-center to make it 3-0. After a bunt single by Talor Haro, Urfer hit her second homer of the contest to straightaway center to increase the margin to 5-0.

The Bruins will host Washington next weekend at Easton Stadium in a matchup of the last two national champions. Game times are Thursday at 7 p.m., Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 12 p.m. Gametracker and free live audio will be available at UCLABruins.com.
