Seven members of the recruiting class for UCLA Women's Rowing competed at the USRowing Youth National Championships June 11-13 on Harsha Lake in Bethel, Ohio. All seven advanced to the grand finals in their events and they came away with one gold and three silver medal performances.

The highlight from a UCLA perspective was having a future Bruin in the first place, second place, fourth place, and fifth place crews in the youth eight event. Connecticut Boat Club won the gold medal with incoming Bruin Kat Lauer rowing in the five seat. This completed an impressive undefeated year for CBC. Highlights included winning the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in the fall as well as the San Diego Crew Classic and their Northeast District Championship in the spring season.

Future UCLA freshman Nicole Sung-Jereczek rowed in the two seat for the silver medal crew from Oakland Strokes. Oakland also had a strong regular season and won the Southwest District championship to qualify for the national championships.

Ali Scullion, another future Bruin, coxed the Los Gatos Rowing Club to fourth place in the final. LGRC had placed third in the Southwest District to gain their entry for nationals.

Incoming Bruin Vicky Babson stroked the boat from Mount Saint Joseph Academy to fifth in the grand final. The Mount had previously won the gold medals at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta and the Mid-Atlantic District Championship.

Deanna Wong, another UCLA fall enrollee, took home a silver medal for the Pacific Rowing Club of San Francisco in the youth pair event. PRC had qualified for the national regatta with a bronze medal finish at the district championships.

Also capturing a silver medal was Los Gatos Rowing Club's Amanda Fox in the lightweight eight. Over the last couple of years Fox, who will join the UCLA program this fall, has rowed in both LGRC's open-weight eight and its lightweight eight.

Finally, Long Beach Rowing Club's Sara Mores helped her crew to a fourth place finish in the lightweight four. Mores, an incoming UCLA freshman, has rowed in a number of LBJC crews this year as both a sweep rower and sculler.

The entire recruiting class will start its collegiate rowing career when the UCLA fall quarter begins in September. The rowers will be joining the women's team coming off its most successful season in the nine-year history of the NCAA era. UCLA earned its first full-team invitation to the 2010 NCAA Championships, at which the first eight finished in a program best ninth place as the team finished 12th overall.
