The men's and women's track and field teams are headed to Des Moines, IA and Drake University this Wednesday through Saturday to compete at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The men's team, ranked 21st in the latest poll, head into the meet with six individuals and the 4x100m relay competing. The women's team has three individuals and the 4x400m relay. Competing for the men are Maxwell Dyce (200m), Cory Primm (800m), 4x100m relay, Mike Woepse (pole vault), Jonathan Clark (triple jump), Bo Taylor (discus) and Alec Faldermeyer (hammer). The women will be represented by Ashlea McLaughlin (400m), Turquoise Thompson (400m hurdles), the 4x400m relay and Ida Storm (hammer).
Primm is one of the front runners for the 800m crown after running 1:44.71 a few weeks back at Oxy. If he wins the individual title, it will be the first outdoor NCAA title in UCLA history (Jess Strutzel won the indoor crown in 2000). It would also be the first NCAA outdoor win since 1999 when the 4x400m relay won.
Thompson will also be in the hunt for the 400m hurdles crown after posting the fastest preliminary qualifying mark (56.06). If she wins, Thompson will have tallied the 10th Bruin win in the event. The last NCAA 400m hurdles champion was Nicole Leach in 2009.
Freshmen Faldermeyer and Storm will contend for All-American honors along with Jonathan Clark. Faldermeyer earned indoor All-American honors and is ranked in the top 10 in the NCAA for the hammer. Storm is also ranked in the top 10 nationally in the hammer. Clark has had a fantastic senior season and will look to wrap up his career with the first All-American honor of his career.
