#1 UCLA Faces #16 Oregon

Jan. 6, 2007

EUGENE, Ore. -

This is the 101st meeting between UCLA and Oregon with the Bruins holding a 76-24 lead in the series, including a 30-18 advantage in Eugene, Ore. The Bruins have won the last four meetings, including last year's match-up in McArthur Court 56-49 on Jan. 26, 2006. Luc Richard Mbah a Moute led the Bruins with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. While the Bruins have won the last four meetings, the Ducks are 6-5 in the last 11 contests. The Ducks' last win over UCLA was on March 6, 2004 when Oregon held serve at home with a 60-59 thriller.

> UCLA is one of only two undefeated teams in the country. The top-ranked Bruins (14-0) and 18th-ranked Clemson (15-0) are the only teams left in college basketball without a loss on the young season. Clemson hosts Georgia Tech on Saturday (Jan. 6) at 1 p.m. (PST).

> Oregon marks the fifth ranked team the Bruins have faced this season (4-0 vs. ranked teams). The Bruins beat then-20th ranked Kentucky 73-68 in the semifinals of the EA Sports Maui Invitational (Nov. 21) and then-19th ranked Georgia Tech 88-73 in the finals of the Maui Invite (Nov. 22). UCLA handed then-sixth ranked Texas A&M a 65-62 loss in the John R. Wooden Classic (Dec. 9) and then-13th ranked Washington a 96-74 setback on Dec. 31, 2006 in Pauley Pavilion.

> UCLA's 14-0 start is tied for the 10th-best start in UCLA history and is its best start in 14 years (since the 1993-94 season). If the Bruins defeat Oregon, UCLA's 15-0 start would be the best in 34 years, since the 1972-73 national championship squad went 30-0.

> The Bruins are no strangers to early morning wake-up calls. UCLA handed then-sixth ranked Texas A&M a 65-62 loss in an 11:30 a.m. tip-off at Honda Center in the Wooden Classic on Dec. 9. The Bruins later destroyed Michigan 92-55 with an 11:00 a.m. tip-off in Pauley Pavilion on Dec. 23. After the 11:00 a.m. tip with the Ducks, the Bruins tip at 11:30 a.m. at USC on FSN Prime Ticket (Jan. 13); 10:00 a.m. (PST) at West Virginia on CBS (Feb. 10) and 10:00 a.m. (PST) at Arizona on CBS (Feb. 17).

> The Bruins shot a paltry 63.3 percent (145-of-229) from the free-throw line during non-conference games, but have turned it around in Pac-10 play, sinking 75.0 percent (33-of-44) from the charity stripe in the first three games. Josh Shipp (11-for-11) and Arron Afflalo (6-for-6) are a big part of the improvement. Lorenzo Mata has also seen made an improvement, shooting 60.0 percent (3-for-5) from the line in league games after making just 27.8 percent (10-of-36) from the line during non-conference action. Shipp has made 22 consecutive free throws (last miss was in the second half against Oakland on Dec. 16). Afflalo has made his last six attempts (last miss was in the second half against Michigan on Dec. 23). Henry Bibby holds the school record for most consecutive free throws at 36 in 1972 (span of five games).

> The Bruins had five players reach double figures in scoring (all five starters) for the first time this season in a balanced 71-56 win at Oregon State (Jan. 4). Led by Josh Shipp's 18 points, the Bruins also got 14 points from Arron Afflalo, 11 from Luc Richard Mbah a Moute and Darren Collison and 10 from Lorenzo Mata.

> One advantage the Bruins have had this season is in three-point shooting. UCLA is second in the Pac-10 and 24th in the nation in three-point field goal percentage (41.1 percent, 104-of-253). While the Bruins have shot better than 36 percent from beyond the arc in each of the last eight games, no Bruin opponent has shot better than 35 percent in the last 11 contests.

> While on the subject of shooting, the Bruins also rank second in the Pac-10 in field goal percentage, shooting 50.6 percent (402-of-795) good enough for 11th in the nation. UCLA has shot 50 percent or better in eight games this season, including a season-high 59.7 percent (40-of-67) in the blowout win (96-74) over then-13th ranked Washington (Dec. 31) in Pauley Pavilion.
