LOS ANGELES - The UCLA baseball team pounded out a season-high 19 hits en route to a 15-2 victory over Cal State Bakersfield in the first-ever meeting between the Division I programs Tuesday evening at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Right-hander Garett Claypool (2-1) registered his second victory in as many starts, allowing one hit in five innings while notching seven strikeouts and one walk.

Catcher Gino Aielli led the offense with a career-best 5-for-6 performance against the visiting Roadrunners (9-31). Aielli belted one of UCLA's four home runs and added one double, scoring a career-high three runs. Left fielder Gabe Cohen went 2-for-3 with two home runs and a career-high five RBI for the Bruins (23-22), who registered their 13th win in 18 games.

First baseman Cody Decker reached base safely in five of six plate appearances, going 2-for-3 with a career-high four runs and three walks. Center fielder Chris Giovinazzo was 2-for-4 with two runs and a career-best three RBI. UCLA also received multiple-hit efforts from shortstop Niko Gallego (2-for-5) and designated hitter Casey Haerther, who went 2-for-4 with his eighth homer of the season, two runs and two RBI.

Cal State Bakersfield left-hander Jonathan Montoya (3-5) was tagged with the loss, surrendering 10 runs (nine earned) and eight hits in 3.1 innings. Montoya logged five strikeouts and issued four walks.

UCLA raced to a 7-0 lead through three innings. Cohen initiated the Bruins' scoring with a two-run homer to right-center field in a three-run second inning. Center fielder Chris Giovinazzo followed the round-tripper by reaching on a fielding error and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Steve Rodriguez.

Aielli led off the third inning with a solo homer to left field. After a single by Haerther and walk by first baseman Cody Decker, Cohen clubbed his second homer of the game, a three-run blast to left field.

UCLA's four-run fourth inning was highlighted by a two-run single from Giovinazzo and a two-RBI double to deep center field by right fielder Dustin Quist, pushing the Bruins' cushion to 11-0. Haerther's two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth handed UCLA a 13-0 lead before Giovinazzo lined a run-scoring single up the middle.

Cal State Bakersfield got on the board with one run in the top of the sixth and added its second run of the game in the eighth inning. UCLA secured a 15-2 lead on an infield single by designated hitter Chris Amezquita in the bottom of the eighth.

UCLA opens a three-game Pac-10 series against California (19-26, 6-15 Pac-10) on Friday. Game time at Jackie Robinson Stadium is 6 p.m. The Bruins and Golden Bears continue their series Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Fans can listen to a live audio broadcast, free of charge, available online at uclabruins.com.
