Lauren Cheney Named UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week

Nov. 26, 2007

Sophomore forward Lauren Cheney (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis HS) of the UCLA women's soccer team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Nov. 20-25.

Cheney assisted on the game-tying goal and then scored the game-winning goal in overtime, propelling the top-seeded Bruins to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over No. 4 Virginia in the NCAA Round of 16 on Friday evening. With the Bruins less than eight minutes away from elimination, Cheney's assist on Kristina Larsen's goal in the 83rd minute tied the match. Cheney then scored the game-winner in the 98th minute, sending the Bruins to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the fifth-straight year. Cheney broke the school single-season scoring record on Friday, as she now has 55 points on the season (22g, 11a). She entered the match tied for the single-season lead with Traci Arkenberg, who had 52 points in 1997.

This is Cheney's second UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of her career. She is the first Bruin to earn multiple Student-Athlete of the Week honors this year.

Also nominated: Kevin Love, M. Basketball; Kyle Nakazawa, M. Soccer; Lindsey Pluimer, W. Basketball; Kaitlin Sather, W. Volleyball; Krsto Sbutega, M. Water Polo; Christian Taylor, Football.
