Los Angeles - UCLA's Ahmed Ismail upset top-seeded Dean Jackson of San Diego on Thursday, as he led a group of three Bruin players into the quarterfinals of the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Ismail, who qualified for the main draw with two wins on Wednesday, began the day with a 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 win over Pepperdine's Sebastian Fanselow in the first round. He then knocked off Jackson, the nation's 17th-ranked player, 6-1, 7-5. Awaiting Ismail in the quarterfinals is USC's JT Sundling, who upset fifth-seeded Matt Brooklyn, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the second round.
Qualifier Alex Brigham and third-seeded Holden Seguso also advanced to the quarterfinals on Thursday. Seguso didn't drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 second-round win over Loyola Marymount's Borja Malet. Brigham upset fourth-seeded teammate Nick Meister, 7-6, 6-3.
Singles play continues on Friday at 11:00 a.m. Main draw doubles is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
