On the strength of three event wins, the Gold team dismantled the Blue Team in the annual intrasqaud meet by a score of 31-17 over the two day, three event meet held last Thursday and Friday. Thursday's platform event paced the Gold Team to their first event title with a win by sophomore Tess Schofield. Her total of 220.8 was good enough to stay ahead of sophomore Brittany Hill (192.5 pts) to put the gold team in the lead.
Friday started in a different fashion with sophomore Marisa Samaniego of the Blue Team winning the one meter springboard event with a total of 264.6 points (just .4 away from an NCAA Zone Qualifying score). The Gold Team minimized the win by taking the next three slots as senior Sara Clark, senior Amanda Blong, and Tess Schofield (251.55, 248.55, and 239.85 respectively) were able to keep the event loss to only one point. Sophomores Brittany Hill and Shannon Pirozzi finished up fifth and sixth (196.5 and 149.4) to round out the scoring.
The next event would prove to be the Blue Team's undoing, as Clark won the event in convincing fashion with a point total of 276.15 (less than four points off the NCAA Zone Qualifying score). Blong placed second (225.36) and Pirozzi placed third (152.55).
"We had some very good things happen during the events," said Dive Coach Tom Stebbins. "I am pleased with how we competed for the most part. We have lots to do before we open up our fall schedule in a couple of weeks, but I believe the foundation work we have done is sound and that we are very ready to move forward. We have a very challenging fall schedule (competing in 4 of 5 weekends), so if we are going to handle the rigors of this part of the year, we need to get ahead of some of the issues that are holding us back right now."
The Bruin Diving Team returns to competition in two weeks when they head to the Trojan Diving Invite November 3-4. They will then return home to face Arizona State (11/10) and Arizona (11/11) in Pac-10 action. The Bruins will then wrap up the 2006 portion of their schedule at the Texas Invitational November 30-December 2.
